Job Description: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Position Summary

Solvet Services is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to provide comprehensive laboratory support services at the Memphis VA Medical Center. The Medical Laboratory Technician performs a variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures to assist physicians and healthcare providers in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The MLT is responsible for specimen collection, processing, analysis, quality control, equipment maintenance, and accurate reporting of laboratory results while adhering to Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), HIPAA, and Solvet Services policies and procedures.

Contract Length: Base Year - Plus 4 Option Years

  • Expected Schedule (Monday – Friday) for the following shifts:
  • Day, Mid, and Night shifts available
  • Note: The daily tour of duty is eight and a half hours including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related laboratory science from an accredited institution.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by one of the following preferred:
    • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
    • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
    • American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB)
  • Current certification must be maintained throughout employment if required by contract.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of recent clinical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory principles, specimen processing, testing methodologies, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation, laboratory information systems (LIS), and electronic medical records.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • State Laboratory License from any state. (Preferred)

Job Description:

  • Perform routine and moderately complex laboratory testing in accordance with established laboratory procedures and quality standards.
  • Conduct testing in laboratory disciplines including:
    • Hematology
    • Clinical Chemistry
    • Coagulation
    • Urinalysis
    • Microbiology
    • Immunology/Serology
    • Blood Bank/Immunohematology (as authorized)
  • Collect, receive, label, process, and prepare patient specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and analyzers.
  • Perform and document daily quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Recognize abnormal or questionable test results and follow established protocols for repeat testing or referral.
  • Accurately enter and verify laboratory results within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and electronic health record (EHR).
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, logs, and documentation required by regulatory agencies.
  • Follow established infection control, biosafety, and hazardous materials handling procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with specimen handling, storage, transport, and chain-of-custody requirements.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory and notify supervisors of supply needs.
  • Assist with proficiency testing and laboratory accreditation activities.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and VA privacy regulations.
  • Collaborate professionally with pathologists, laboratory scientists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel.
  • Participate in continuing education and competency assessments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Solvet Services management or the VA Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).

Security Requirements

  • Must successfully complete all required background investigations and credentialing necessary for access to VA facilities.
  • Must comply with all Veterans Affairs security, privacy, cybersecurity, and information protection requirements.
  • Must maintain eligibility to work under federal government contracts.
