Position Details

Position: Middle School Principal

Location: Mason Middle School

Job Summary and Responsibilities: The Principal will be an inspiration to all Mason stakeholders, embodying optimism, tenacity, and the courage to lead in the most difficult circumstances. The candidate must have an exemplary work ethic and proven success record in secondary education. Technical ability to leverage digital tools for learning and assessment is essential.

  • Design opportunities to empower students, staff, and parents to be integrally involved in all aspect of the school's culture and climate
  • Demonstrate a willingness and aptitude for public speaking in both prepared and extemporaneous formats
  • Embrace change, innovation, and ability to envision and actualize learning beyond the traditional walls of the classroom and the school
  • Commit to high visibility by demonstrating a consistent presence in the school community
  • Understand the complexities and nuances of hiring, inspiring, and mentoring all staff members to exceed expectations
  • Work with staff to analyze student achievement data and to improve instruction
  • Understand the school's responsibility to prepare students for their futures in rapidly changing global society
  • Provide the overall leadership, direction, coordination, and evaluation of a middle school program, including teaming and the goals of a middle school model
  • Direct and coordinate the duties and responsibilities ordinarily delegated to the assistant principal
  • Supervise and evaluate staff
  • Establish a culture of high expectations for both academics and behavior
  • Interact with students in a constructive manner, encouraging each to perform at his/her highest level
  • Maintain positive relations with parents, parent groups, school volunteers, business partners, and other related agencies
  • Work with staff in the development and execution of school improvement plans
  • Participate in district-wide activities, such as PreK-12 meetings, curriculum planning, and in-service training
  • Manage the school budget, facility, and events
  • Monitor, manage, and remain abreast of school safety and security
  • Work with central office personnel to coordinate processes for the effective functioning of the school and the Waterford School District

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate, preferably in Secondary Education
  • Michigan School Administrators Certificate or intent/ability to pursue certification within six months after employment leading to completion of the program within three years
  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, School Administration or Curriculum
  • Three years of successful administrative experience preferred
  • Minimum of five years of successful secondary teaching experience
  • Exemplary communication skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of recent research on school and teacher effectiveness
  • Knowledge and understanding of social-emotional learning and its role in schools
  • Current professional development in best practices in teaching and learning
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable

Competencies:

  • Strong background in instructional leadership
  • Personal commitment to academic excellence with student achievement as a priority goal
  • Leadership experience working with diverse populations and special needs students
  • Skilled in leading school improvement and applying data to initiate specific instructional change
  • Knowledge and experience in closing the achievement gap using research and evidence-based instruction
  • Experience evaluating instructional and support staff that will improve teaching and learning
  • Proficient use of student information systems
  • Evidence of ability to positively affect school culture and by creating an open, enthusiastic and well-organized teaching and learning environment
  • Collaborative leadership experience and in depth knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of 6th - Post Secondary

Schedule: 12 Months (Start date to be determined)

Compensation: Administrative Salary range of $121,000 - $134,000
