Position: Middle School Musical - Music Director
Reports To: Building Principal or Designee
Schedule: Seasonal, including after-school, evening, and weekend rehearsals and performances
Position Summary: The Middle School Musical Music Director oversees the musical components of the annual middle school theatrical production. Working collaboratively with the Musical Director and production team, the Music Director prepares students for vocal performances, provides musical instruction, and ensures the overall quality of the production''s musical elements. The position focuses on developing students'' musical abilities, building confidence, and providing a positive and inclusive performing arts experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Musical Director and production team to plan and coordinate the musical elements of the production.
- Assist with student auditions and casting by evaluating vocal abilities and providing recommendations regarding musical roles.
- Teach and rehearse all vocal selections, including solos, ensembles, and full-cast musical numbers.
- Provide instruction in vocal techniques, harmonization, rhythm, diction, and musical expression appropriate for middle school students.
- Develop and implement a music rehearsal schedule in coordination with the overall production schedule.
- Prepare students for musical performances, ensuring familiarity with their individual and ensemble responsibilities.
- Coordinate with choreographers and other production staff to integrate musical performances with staging and movement.
- Arrange or adapt musical selections, as permitted by applicable licensing agreements, to accommodate student abilities and production needs.
- Coordinate and oversee instrumental accompaniment, including rehearsals with accompanists or musicians, as applicable.
- Direct or conduct musical performances during rehearsals and live productions, as needed.
- Ensure appropriate care, organization, and use of musical scores, recordings, instruments, and equipment.
- Supervise students during assigned rehearsals and performances, maintaining a safe, respectful, and productive environment.
- Communicate regularly with the Musical Director regarding student progress, rehearsal needs, and production readiness.
- Promote student participation, teamwork, musical growth, and confidence through positive instruction and encouragement.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Building Principal or designee.
Qualifications:
- Background in music education, vocal performance, musical theater, or a related field preferred.
- Experience providing vocal instruction or directing student musical performances.
- Ability to read musical scores and teach vocal parts, harmonies, and musical arrangements.
- Experience working with middle school students in an educational or extracurricular setting.
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students of varying musical abilities and experience levels.

Terms of Employment: This is a seasonal extracurricular assignment requiring participation in auditions, music rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and related production activities. The Music Director works collaboratively with the Musical Director and production team to ensure students are musically prepared for the production. Evening and weekend commitments may be required.
