Job Title: Middle School College & Career Advisor

Reports to: Principal Dept: School Assigned Campus Wage: Hour Status Exempt Pay Grade: Instructional 1 192 days Date Revised: 61419

Primary Purpose Under the direction of the Campus Principal and the Director of Social & Emotional Services and in conjunction with High School College & Career Advisors, plan and provide a proactive developmental guidance program that aligns with high school programs to educate students and parents on postsecondary options, encourage all students to maximize personal growth and development, and prepare for successful transition into high school.

Qualifications Education Certification: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Ability to build relationships with school staff, students, and parents
  • Knowledge of CTE programs and endorsements
  • Experience in career development, post-secondary guidance, or admission

Experience

  • Participation in a college preparatory program while in high school preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Program Management

  • Assist students in preparing for a successful life after high school through career exploration and post-secondary education information.
  • Provide guidance and career counseling to individuals and groups of students to develop education plans and career awareness.
  • Provide individual career advising as needed.
  • Assist students in preparing to choose an endorsement in 8th grade that is aligned with a post-secondary goal.
  • Communicate with parents regarding endorsements and post-secondary education.
  • Supplement the efforts of the counseling staff, teachers, and administration in providing opportunities and information needed by students to assure their success after graduation.
  • Promote CTE programs to students, parents, administrators, counselors, teachers, and the community.
  • Plan college and career programs to ensure that they meet identified needs.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the college and career program and make changes based on findings.
  • Make presentations to parents.
  • Participate in the coordination of special programs.
  • Provide feedback on the development and delivery of career and technical education programs that incorporate district goals and support student achievement.
  • Participate in planning and preparing for college entrance assessments, including Duke Talent Search.
  • Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately.
  • Schedule and coordinate the administration of the PSAT or similar college preparatory assessment.
  • Assist students and parents in interpreting and utilizing career interest inventories.
  • Educate and guide students and parents on the importance of advanced academic courses, grades, and community involvement/volunteering in relation to college and career goals.

Consultation

  • Help students and others use special programs and services.
  • Keep up-to-date with dual credit and endorsement information.
  • Develop relationships with academic guidance counselors and student support counselors.
  • Collaborate with the other MSCCAs, HSCCAs, and the Director of Social & Emotional Services.

Administration

  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the college and career area.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Participate in the district-wide college nights, parent meetings, etc.

Professional

  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
  • Attend professional workshops and staff development opportunities.
  • Attend district PLCs, department, and professional development meetings as required.
