About this role
What we're looking for:
We need a mid-level associate attorney with 3-6 years of civil defense litigation experience who is comfortable handling complex commercial litigation matters. You should have a track record of managing cases from pleadings through trial, be experienced with tracking billable hours, and hold an active Missouri Bar license. Bonus points if you have construction law experience or are also licensed in Illinois.
What you'll do:
- Handle a full caseload of civil defense litigation matters across practice areas including construction, premises liability, personal injury defense, professional liability, civil rights, and insurance defense
- Work directly with principals on case strategy, depositions, motions practice, and trial preparation in a highly collaborative, open-door environment
- Draft discovery, dispositive motions, and pre-trial pleadings while managing multiple matters under deadlines
- Take and defend depositions and represent clients in state and federal court hearings
- Maintain billable hour requirements (target of 165-200 average billable hours per month) while delivering high-quality work product
- Participate in continuing legal education opportunities including in-house CLEs, Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers Trial Academy, and IADC programs
Why Us:
- Celebrating 35 years — a stable, established defense firm with consistent caseload and real partnership track (all current principals came up as associates)
- Meaningful courtroom exposure early — you'll be in hearings, depositions, and trials, not buried in doc review
- Super collaborative culture where associates regularly work alongside principals with an open-door policy
- Strong commitment to professional development with firm-sponsored continuing education and trial academies
- Comprehensive benefits including health insurance, 401(k) with 3% match, annual profit sharing (1-3%), year-end bonus structure ($3K-$20K based on billables), firm-issued laptop, and free parking in downtown St. Louis
- Flexibility when life demands it — while the role is primarily in-office, the firm accommodates work-from-home needs and is understanding of family and personal obligations
