Education Requirements

  • Associate degree, technical degree, or coursework in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Engineering Technology, Laboratory Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required; relevant laboratory or manufacturing experience may be considered in place of formal education.
  • Ability to follow detailed testing procedures, work instructions, and quality standards.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, documentation, and test reporting.

Experience Requirements

  • Previous laboratory, materials testing, quality control, metallurgical, or manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience preparing metal samples using saws, grinders, polishers, or other laboratory equipment is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with hardness testing, tensile testing, metallography, or material analysis preferred.
  • Experience working with microscopes, measuring devices, and precision testing equipment is a plus.

  • Ability to accurately evaluate small components and material characteristics using microscopes and testing instruments.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience using hand tools and laboratory equipment.

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the laboratory during the workday.
  • Frequent use of hand tools, microscopes, precision measuring devices, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle metal samples and laboratory materials.
  • Manual dexterity required for sample preparation, testing, and equipment operation.
  • Ability to work safely in a hands-on laboratory environment.

Job Duties

  • Prepare metal samples for testing using band saws, cut-off saws, metallographic saws, grinders, and polishing equipment.
  • Perform metallographic sample mounting, grinding, polishing, and preparation for laboratory analysis.
  • Conduct hardness testing, tensile testing, corrosion testing, surface roughness measurements, and pH analysis.
  • Evaluate microstructures using microscopes and assist with material characterization activities.
  • Operate laboratory equipment, including microscopes, spectrometers, balances, and testing instruments.
  • Record, analyze, and document testing results accurately.
  • Perform routine cleaning, calibration checks, and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient laboratory environment while following all quality and safety procedures.
