Metal Stamping Set-Up Specialist, Small Press Operations

Based in: Saint Paul, MN | Department: Operations | Employment: Full-time | Compensation: $28–$36/hr

You’re at a small press cell, materials staged and labeled. A fresh setup is ready. You verify specs with calipers, align tooling, and bring the press online. The first-off part checks out to print. Mid-run, a defect appears—you pause, analyze the die and press, and coordinate with Toolroom and Maintenance. You log the root cause, update the work instructions for next time, and enter production and quality data—keeping the area clean, safe, and audit-ready.

How you’ll contribute

  • Read/interpret blueprints, job routings, and work instructions
  • Independently set up and operate small stamping presses to achieve quality and efficiency targets
  • Install basic tooling; prepare presses and materials for production runs
  • Perform precision measurements (calipers, micrometers, tape measures) to validate specifications
  • Apply and develop root cause analysis skills; engage Toolroom/Maintenance for timely repairs
  • Drive ideas for process improvements that enhance quality and throughput
  • Inspect incoming materials and finished parts to confirm conformance
  • Accurately tag/label materials for identification
  • Complete routine maintenance and sustain a clean, organized workspace
  • Capture setup details and author clear work instructions for repeatability
  • Record production and quality data in the company’s data collection system
  • Adhere to safety procedures and compliance guidelines at all times
  • Partner with teammates to meet production schedules and delivery deadlines
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What you bring

  • Knowledge of punch press operation and die setting
  • Intermediate blueprint reading capability
  • Detail orientation with strong inspection and quality skills
  • Proven troubleshooting and time-management abilities
  • Clear communicator and collaborative team member
  • Safety-first mindset and dedication to continuous improvement

Background

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • 1+ year of experience in metal fabrication or related work
  • Press operation experience preferred

Physical demands

  • Visual and auditory capability, including close/distance/peripheral/depth perception and focus adjustment
  • Frequent standing, walking, and movement for the duration of the shift
  • Frequent hand use for handling, reaching, and equipment operation
  • Ability to sustain repetitive tasks and long periods of focus
  • Lift up to 25 lbs regularly; up to 50 lbs occasionally
