Created in 1933, the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) is the only state organization that represents municipal governments in Georgia. Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and technical consulting services to its members.
Memeber Service Consultant
The purpose of this position is to help GMA member cities improve municipal governance and operations by providing a range of consulting and educational services; enhance member awareness and member participation in GMA programs, services, and resources; build relationships with municipal officials and staff; plan and execute GMA district meetings; and serve as a district representative in coordination with district officers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Provides municipal elected officials, city managers/administrators, city clerks, finance officers, and other key staff with advice and assistance related to municipal governance and operations, as well as information about services and resources available through GMA, state and federal agencies, professional associations, and other organizations.
- Works with GMA team members and state and non-profit agencies to plan, prepare, and deliver training courses, retreats, webinars, regional workshops, online tutorials, certification programs, publications, and other educational programs that promote leadership, professional development, teambuilding, and enhance the acquired skills of good governance.
- Collaborates with members of the Government Relations team to develop and implement strategies that ensure member cities are aware of and compliant with state and federal laws and regulations, and to assess the impact of proposed legislation on municipal operations.
- Responds to information requests and inquiries from city officials and senior staff.
- Makes presentations at city council meetings and various conferences, workshops, and training programs.
- Assists in providing staff support to the Association's Member Services Advisory Council (workforce development advisory committee, member services advisory committee, community and workplace culture advisory committee)
- Assists in identifying, evaluating, and developing new or enhanced GMA services aimed at helping member cities operate more effectively and promoting such services to members, while keeping current with industry standards.
- Collaborates with members of the Risk Management & Employee Benefits and Corporate Engagement teams to identify needs, services, and resources that support cities and staff.
- Represents GMA at various professional association meetings, conferences, and workshops to build relationships with attendees and educate them about GMA programs and services.
- Serves as staff liaison with district officers in designated districts and works with district officers to plan and execute GMA district meetings and to assist with the district officers' nomination process, etc.
- Collaborates with the Conference and Planning teams to lead and oversee Member Services Consultants' sponsored conferences, events, summits, workshops, and programs.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates a motor vehicle to conduct work activities.
- Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Sound knowledge of municipal government administration principles, practices, and procedures.
- Basic understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to municipal government administration.
- Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Strong computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and AI platforms.
- Ability to travel long distances and work independently.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in public administration, Political Science, Business Administration, or related field; five years' experience in local government administration; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.
