Medical Underwriting Manager
Overland Park, KS

We’re seeking an experienced Medical Underwriting Manager to lead a growing small-group medical underwriting team. This opportunity is ideal for a hands-on leader who enjoys developing employees, making sound underwriting decisions, and improving day-to-day operations.

The manager will oversee new business and renewal underwriting, eligibility reviews, rescission reviews, and policy issuance. This role will also guide risk and rate decisions while ensuring accurate, timely work and responsive service to internal teams and external partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop underwriting staff through regular feedback, performance evaluations, monthly one-on-one meetings, and training.
  • Coordinate daily workflows, balance workloads, and manage deadlines across the team.
  • Oversee underwriting for new business and renewals, including eligibility, rescission reviews, and policy issuance.
  • Make final risk determinations on group and renewal business when needed.
  • Build productive relationships with sales, general agents, agents, and program managers.
  • Review and approve claim referrals before submission to carriers.
  • Analyze underwriting reports, renewal activity, and medical cost data to guide decisions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, efficiency, and underwriting quality.
  • Support cross-training and individualized employee development plans.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of supervisory or people-management experience.
  • Experience with small-group medical underwriting and database underwriting.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make informed risk decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, deadlines, and changing workloads.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a college degree or relevant coursework preferred.
