DEFINITION

Designs, manages, and maintains a clinical or public health laboratory information system.

Essential Job Functions

Develops, designs and formats management reports utilizing a report-writer program.

Conducts system-verification tests to ensure the operational accuracy of data transmission related to database/client and equipment interfaces and test code reproducibility.

Designs, formats, and collects data from laboratory information system applications/programs for quality control procedures; creates reports for on-going quality assessment.

Acts as a liaison between the laboratory unit, contract maintenance and repair service and other units within the medical facility, department or external agencies/clients concerning problems with the laboratory information system.

Assists in implementing, supporting and may validate electronic interfaces linking the laboratory information system to other information systems or instruments.

Assists in conducting training programs and providing direction to laboratory personnel in the use of laboratory information systems, instrument interfaces and change implementation.

Analyzes, oversees, and revises existing laboratory information system applications, data system parameters, and associated test code definitions for analytical tests on human, animal and environmental specimens to conform with updated test methodology or standard value ranges.

Maintains and updates the master test file, user and client profiles, procedure and security clearance files and access user levels.

Develops and documents backup procedures to ensure the viability and accessibility of laboratory information and operations in the event of system malfunction.

Requirements

We are looking for dedicated individuals who have:

Three years of experience as a clinical laboratory scientist* or public health microbiologist in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) - certified laboratory.

  • LICENSE:

Los Angeles County Department of Health Services: Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the California Department of Public Health.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health: Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Microbiologist Scientist License, or Public Health Microbiologist Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience using Cerner System for managing hospital laboratory reports.
  • Additional experience beyond the Selection Requirements.

PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

  • Experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist is defined as: performs a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests within a specialized area (such as biochemistry, hematology, microbiology, or immunohematology) or across specialty lines using manual or instrumented methodology.

Experience as a Public Health Microbiologist is defined as: performs a variety of standardized public health laboratory tests within a specialized area (such as bacteriology, virology, serology, or parasitology) or across specialty lines.

NOTE: You may still qualify even if your job title isn't exactly the same as the ones listed. What matters is that your experience is at a similar level - meaning your job involves similar responsibilities, requires comparable skills and knowledge, and takes place within a similar organizational structure. Please provide a clear explanation of your experience to demonstrate that it is at the appropriate level.

A Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-certified laboratory is a laboratory that meets U.S. federal quality standards for testing human samples, such as blood, urine, saliva, or tissue, for health-related purposes.

All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted or your application will not be accepted.

Additional Information

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience based upon application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.

Candidates need to achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:

Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the eligible register accordingly.

Candidates who have received a passing score are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

The eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
