Hello, we're Metro! Metro is dedicated to shaping a better future for the greater Portland region. The work the people of Metro do every day benefits the lives of the people who live here, today, and tomorrow.

The Oregon Convention Center Department is seeking Medical Technicians who want to be part of a team focused on event safety and guest support. In this role, you'll help create a safe and welcoming environment for clients, guests, and visitors attending a wide range of events. You'll work in a 24/7 operation that supports not only the public, but also staff and vendors. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside a diverse team of professionals, including Nurses, Paramedics, and EMTs.

In this position, you'll gain hands-on experience providing urgent and emergency care during events by assessing injuries and illnesses and coordinating with external Fire/EMS when needed. Your primary work location will be the Oregon Convention Center, with occasional opportunities to work at other Metro venues such as the Portland Expo Center, giving you exposure to different event settings and environments.

While you will respond to urgent and emergency situations, many calls are non-life-threatening, allowing you to build strong assessment and patient interaction skills in a lower-acuity setting. You'll also spend time engaging with the public by answering questions, giving directions, and providing general assistance, helping you develop communication and customer service experience. This role is well-suited for someone dependable, knowledgeable, and comfortable balancing medical response with public interaction, while knowing when to act with urgency.

As the Medical Technician you will:

  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide medical assistance to injured or sick persons on facility premises

  • Monitor and communicate when needed, to ALS EMTs regarding chief complaint and transfer care effectively.

  • Determine the severity of illness or injury; and initiate emergency response as the situation requires.

  • Maintains first aid/medical supplies and equipment inventory; ensures adequate stock of medical supplies and equipment; processes requests for replenishment of stock as needed.

  • Ensure medical equipment is in proper working condition; clean and sanitize equipment as needed.

  • Ensure proper disposal of biohazard materials.

  • Act as a resource for injured and sick persons by providing information with regard to the location of urgent clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, etc. for further evaluation.

  • Completes reports within the expectations of documentation.

  • Perform work in accordance with established protocols, policies, practices, and procedures of the department.

  • Provide excellent customer service to attendees and employees when not responding to an urgent or emergent situation.

  • Dispense over-the-counter medications upon request.

  • Perform additional tasks as needed to contribute to the department's success.

Attributes for success

  • Are dependable, trustworthy, professional, and honest, and enjoy interacting with the public and in a team of public safety professionals.

  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service and interact in a positive and respectful way with the public.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional work relationships with co-workers inside and outside of Public Safety.

  • Knowledge of, or a passion for, event safety.

  • Skills and abilities in administering First Aid, CPR, AED, crowd control, and emergency services coordination.

  • Skill in providing clear and concise written documentation of incidents in on-scene notes and the subsequent report.

  • Skill in providing clear and concise verbal debriefs of incidents to managers and first responders.

  • Ability to learn purpose-built computer programs.

  • Ability to read and follow building floor plans, policies, procedures, protocols, directives, and briefings.

  • Ability to provide professional, well-articulated feedback for managers and co-workers.

  • Ability to remain calm and professional in emergency situations while coordinating a response.

  • Ability to run over 1/3 of a mile, on both incline and decline terrain (including stairs) during an emergency incident.

  • Ability to work dayshift, swing shift, late shifts (until approximately 0300), weekends, holidays, and urgent requests as needed.
