POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Specialist is responsible for the evaluation of potential donors for plasmapheresis and for providing limited emergency care, including the administration of any medications or treatments in accordance with licensure or certification, training and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) guidance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

COMPLEXITY
Work includes varied duties requiring numerous unrelated processes and methods or substantial depth of analysis in an administrative or professional field. There are major areas of interpretation and evaluation processes caused by continuing changes, technological developments, conflicting requirements, or unknown phenomena. Work requires the origination of establishing criteria, or developing new information. Occasionally, extensive analysis and probing are required to determine the nature and scope of problems, with concurrent or sequential activities involving others within or outside the organization.
NATURE AND EXTENT OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO THE POSITION
Overall, objectives and resource allocations are determined by the supervisor, providing broad administrative direction, with assignments given in terms of broadly defined missions or functions. Employee plans, designs and carries out projects or other work independently. Results are considered technically sound by virtue of the employee's expertise, and are generally accepted with review only for conformity to objectives, contribution to program goals, or advancement of technological understanding.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, each essential duty (as identified above) must be performed satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
EDUCATION
Graduation from a nursing, EMT, and/or Paramedic training program accredited by the state in which the donor center operates. Experience in a plasma center environment is a plus.
EXPERIENCE
Must have excellent donor assessment skills. Must be able to manage emergency situations in accordance with standard medical care practices and with a calm demeanor. Previous work experience should demonstrate adaptability to changing priorities, excellent attention to detail, legible handwriting, and the ability to deal effectively with people. Minimum two years' experience in a clinical or hospital setting is preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, ETC.
Must have current CPR certificate in the state in which the center operates. Must be currently licensed for the state in which the center operates and must maintain that licensure. Valid LVN, RN, EMT, and/or Paramedic license is required. Valid Driver's License is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work environment with moderate noise level.
May be exposed to freezing temperatures for short periods of time.
Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
