Summary
The Company is seeking a Medical Literacy Editor to join the Patient Engagement editorial team. This role is responsible for editing patient-focused healthcare content to ensure compliance with health literacy and plain language principles while maintaining clinical accuracy, consistency, and readability. The Medical Literacy Editor will review and refine documents and scripts for grammar, style, terminology, reading level, and adherence to established editorial standards and templates. This position requires strong medical editing expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a collaborative environment. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to content that supports patients and healthcare professionals by making medical information accessible and easy to understand.
 
Responsibilities
  • Edit patient education documents and scripts to ensure compliance with health literacy and plain language principles.
  • Review content for consistency with established style guidelines, standard medical terminology, and appropriate reading levels.
  • Copyedit content for grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and readability.
  • Organize and structure documents and scripts according to established templates and editorial standards.
  • Ensure all content is accurate, consistent, error-free, and aligned with applicable editorial guidelines.
  • Collaborate with editorial team members to maintain project schedules and meet production deadlines.
  • Communicate with clinical reviewers regarding clinical accuracy, current practices, evolving guidelines, research developments, and other relevant content updates.
  • Ensure content remains consistent across related documents within the same topic area during scheduled reviews.
  • Edit, update, and manage content within a proprietary content management system.
  • Utilize approved AI tools to support editorial workflows and improve operational efficiency as directed.
  • Maintain document quality while preserving intended clinical meaning and patient-centered communication.
  • Demonstrate independent judgment and attention to detail when reviewing and revising content.
  • Support continuous improvement of editorial processes and content quality standards.
 
Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
 
Experience Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience editing medical or clinical content.
  • Experience working within scientific, technical, or medical (STM) publishing environments.
  • Experience applying editorial standards and style guides to healthcare or clinical content.
  • Experience collaborating with clinical professionals during content review processes.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and meeting established deadlines.
 
Required Skills
  • Strong ability to edit medical and clinical content.
  • Working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition.
  • Working knowledge of the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical and clinical terminology.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to content accuracy.
  • Excellent grammar, spelling, punctuation, and copyediting skills.
  • Ability to apply health literacy and plain language principles to patient-facing materials.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with content management systems and digital editorial workflows.
 
Preferred Skills
  • Experience utilizing AI tools to improve editorial workflows and productivity.
  • Experience with plain language or health literacy editing within an STM publishing environment.
  • Experience communicating and collaborating with clinical professionals.
  • Experience working within a highly matrixed corporate environment.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing processes, procedures, and business needs.
  • Experience editing technical or clinical content for elementary reading levels.
  • Content development or additional editorial experience within scientific, technical, and medical publishing.
  • Certification in plain language principles or related disciplines.
 
Pay Transparency: The typical base pay for this role across the U.S. is: $26.00 - $27.00 /hour. Non-exempt positions are eligible for overtime at a rate of 1.5 times the base hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a work week, or as required by state or local law. Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education and experience. Full-time employees are eligible to select from different benefits packages.
