Reports to: Medical Clinic Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Employment Status: Full-Time; during clinic hours

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday

Work Setting: In-person clinic setting

Location: Santa Barbara, California 93110

Pay Range: $35.00-$42.00 per hour. Please note that this is the current salary range for the position. Starting pay rates are determined based on years of experience and internal equity.

POSITION SUMMARY

American Indian Health & Services is looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our growing public health primary care outpatient clinic. This position performs routine medical laboratory testing that supports the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease and assists with the operation of a moderate-complexity medical laboratory.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Performing routine technical laboratory functions.
• Reporting test results to providers and/or nurses in accordance with clinic protocols.
• Supporting quality control in specimen collection, ensuring appropriate sampling, and maintaining accurate records.
• Setting up, maintaining, calibrating, cleaning, and testing the sterility of medical laboratory equipment.
• Maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Monitoring supply inventory, anticipating laboratory needs, and partnering with the Finance Department to procure and order necessary supplies.
• Complying with laboratory policies and OSHA requirements related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
• Participating in quality management and improvement meetings and projects.
• Developing and maintaining quality management measures for the laboratory.
• Maintaining a general understanding of laboratory tests performed in the clinic, including their purpose and the basic interpretation of normal and abnormal result ranges.
• Under the guidance of a provider and in accordance with clinic protocols, communicating positive and negative test results to patients.
• Performing routine medical assistant duties as needed.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of two years of medical laboratory or medical assistant experience required.
• Certified Laboratory Technician or Certified Phlebotomist preferred.
• Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and testing procedures.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety, cleanliness, and infection-control requirements.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment use and maintenance.
• Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency using computers and electronic medical records.
• Ability to maintain patient, employee, and organizational confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, anticipate problems, and identify solutions.
• Ability to remain flexible, collaborate as part of a team, and complete assignments in stressful situations.
• Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

This position regularly requires the employee to use their hands, reach with their hands and arms, and communicate verbally. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit and may occasionally be required to stoop or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. The position also requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee may be exposed to infectious substances, hazardous chemicals, hazardous waste, and moving equipment. These risks are minimized through compliance with established safety policies and procedures. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate.

Clinic employees may be required to remain at or report to work during public health incidents or emergencies. This may require a non-traditional schedule or duties outside the employee's normal assignment during the incident or emergency.
