Position: Medical Laboratory Scientist Classification: Full Time, Nonexempt, Non SCA Department: Laboratory Reports To: Lab Manager Schedule:Monday–Friday day shift – no weekends** POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, provides state of the art laboratory testing, from neonates to geriatric patients. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:- Processes and tests specimens for clinical studies in accordance with established DGDC policies and procedures, based upon the age and the condition of the patient.
- Review’s test results and applies the correct clinical interpretation of that data.
- Report’s lab results accurately and responsively, to include use of a laboratory information system.
- Processes blood and other body fluids to perform various microscopic analyses.
- Specialize in laboratory instrumentation and equipment, to include operational maintenance.
- Communicate information to others about test results, methodology, specificity; answer questions about specific factors that can influence test results.
- Performs proper specimen handling and processing.
- Perform proficiency testing as routine workload.
- Makes patients and the public feel respected and welcome.
- Attends all mandatory in -services.
- Complies with policies on safety, hazardous materials, standard and transmission-based precautions, and infection control. Keeps a neat and clean work area.
- Must maintain regular, consistent attendance.
- Adheres to acceptable standards of business ethics and integrity, and complies with all federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations in all aspects of business and always.
- Prepares standard solutions, reagents, stains, and controls.
- Performs all testing in a timely manner; expedite Stats; communicate all Panic values.
- Performs basic clerical functions in reviewing and stapling reports.
- May assist in the writing of procedure manuals.
- May teach students in medical technology.
- Possesses good verbal and written communication skills, to include proper use of the telephone.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Meets and documents continuing education requirements as necessary to maintain certifications and to meet regulatory requirements.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
A.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Proper techniques, methods and procedures if basic clinical laboratory testing is required.
- A basic knowledge of how a laboratory functions, and the laboratory’s role in health care delivery is essential.
- Use of a computer data terminal is essential.
- Must be able to communicate orally as well as via the telephone.
- Must possess the skill to manually, or through automated means perform a variety of testing techniques, which may require the use of variable equipment, supplies, and solutions in a single procedure.
- Ability to discern all colors of the white light spectrum; exercise initiative and sound judgement, exercise courtesy and cooperation with patients and other customer contacts, as well as clinic and medical staff(s); instruct new employees/students in basic laboratory procedures.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: - Frequent seating, standing, bending, twisting, reaching forward or overhead and use of stairs
- Frequent lifting of medical equipment up to 49 pounds
- Ability to move quickly in response to patient or office needs
- Clear vision and hearing to interact effectively with team members
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: - Must possess a minimum of a baccalaureate degree from an approved college or university and be a graduate of an accredited school of medical technology or equivalent. Military applicants must have completed both basic and advanced schools of medical laboratory training in addition to holding a baccalaureate degree.
- Experience is desirable, but not essential.
- Must be certified (registered) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or be registry-eligible in accordance with an approved certifying agency, e.g., ASCP, AMT, or equivalent. Registry-eligible personnel must become certified within 1 year from date of hire.
