The Point of Care Testing (POCT) Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in providing timely laboratory results that support clinical decision-making across the institution. The team oversees testing performed at the point of care while maintaining rigorous quality, regulatory, and operational standards to ensure accurate results and reliable testing across multiple clinical settings.
This Medical Laboratory Scientist position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic laboratory environment that combines technical testing, quality oversight, customer service, and clinical support. The role is ideal for a laboratory professional who enjoys working with technology, troubleshooting problems, communicating with healthcare professionals, and contributing to process improvements that enhance laboratory operations and patient care.
In this role, you will perform laboratory testing specific to Point of Care Testing, ensuring testing is completed, verified, and reported accurately and within required timeframes. You will monitor quality control data, perform corrective actions when needed, troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment, assist with validation of new methodologies and tests, and ensure supplies and reagents are appropriately managed.
A unique component of this position is the opportunity to support the POCT laboratory call center, responding to calls regarding specimen testing status and collection requirements and communicating critical values and other laboratory results to healthcare providers. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential as you work with nurses, physicians, laboratory personnel, and other internal customers to answer questions and facilitate timely resolution of issues.
You will also contribute to quality assurance and laboratory development, including performing and monitoring required quality checks for POCT devices and supporting IQCP requirements. You will participate in process improvement projects, assist with validation of databases and new software, and coach and mentor students and employees. The ability to prioritize workload, work independently, and support senior laboratory staff will be important in this fast-paced environment.
Strong computer skills and attention to detail are essential to the role. You will accurately enter specimen information, analyze and evaluate patient results, maintain patient records, and use Microsoft Office to independently prepare laboratory reports. Success requires accountability, sound judgment, and a commitment to maintaining accurate documentation and regulatory compliance.
