JOB SUMMARY Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) operate laboratory equipment to perform tests on patient samples. Samples may include blood, urine, tissue and other body fluids. The successful candidate conducts testing in the following fields of study: chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, blood bank, toxicology and blood gas studies. Medical Technologist must be proficient in blood collection. Successful Candidates perform all facets of general laboratory testing according to procedure, protocol and good laboratory practice. May supervise and/or provide training to other technical staff members as well as phlebotomy staff.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Director of Laboratory Services

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory technology.
  • Work Experience: 2 years of work experience in a CLIA certified lab is preferred.
  • License/Certification: Tennessee License as a Medical Laboratory Technician is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) is preferred.

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Laboratory Services:
  • Understands CLIA and CAP Laboratory Standards and expectations.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment to include but not limited to centrifuges, microscopes and pipettes.
  • Familiar with laboratory standards, concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Good judgment to plan, organize and accomplish specimen processing and testing within the established turn-around-time goals.
  • Characterized as analytical, a good problem-solver and displays critical-thinking abilities.
  • Good communication skills are required for working with patients, lab customers and medical staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares specimens for culture, inoculates appropriate media and incubates in appropriate environment.
  • Accurately identifies and reports bacterial cultures when assigned this duty.
  • Sensitivities are performed when appropriate for bacteria identified.
  • Operates and calibrates laboratory equipment and assures appropriate quality control material is analyzed.
  • All results are scrutinized for accuracy and precision when appropriate.
  • Collects and labels blood samples when needed, to include venipuncture and arterial specimens.
  • Prepare and read blood smears, gram stains and microscopic urine slides as required by protocol for positive screening results.
  • Issues results when testing is complete.
  • Properly stores samples to preserve them for further analysis.
  • Performs various Blood Bank duties to include crossmatches, maternal and neonatal procedures and processes appropriate for platelet and fresh frozen plasma issuance.
  • Keeps the lab neat, organized and sanitary.
  • Ensures that safety and disease-prevention policies are followed.
  • Maintains patient report forms, logs and other lab records.
  • Attends training sessions and maintains continuing education credits.

OTHER DUTIES

  • May provide training for other technical staff and phlebotomists.
  • Performs other related duties and special project work as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds during a scheduled work shift.
  • Must be able to see with corrective eye wear.
  • Must be able to hear clearly with assistance.
  • May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Able to handle emergency and/or crisis situations.
  • May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary.
  • Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching for patient care functions.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
