The Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, in partnership with the St. Louis VA Health Care System, is seeking a full?time infectious diseases clinician to serve as Medical Director of Infection Prevention at the VA.
This position includes 0.375 FTE of protected time dedicated to infection prevention leadership, with additional clinical and academic responsibilities tailored to the candidate’s interests and career goals.
Faculty in this role will support a busy but highly manageable clinical service, supervise trainees across multiple settings, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to advance quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Clinical & Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead infection prevention efforts at the St. Louis VA, including policy development, surveillance activities, outbreak response, and collaboration with hospital leadership
- Supervise trainees across all inpatient responsibilities, including consult service and medicine service rotations
- Provide 12 weeks of Infectious Diseases teaching consult service annually
- Provide 4 weeks of attending on the Internal Medicine inpatient teaching service at the VA
- Deliver 1–2 half days of clinic per week
- Participate in a small number of institutional committees related to infection prevention and quality
- Tailor additional WashU Medicine responsibilities based on academic interests and career trajectory
The ideal candidate will be:
- Passionate about teaching medical students, residents, and fellows
- Interested in infection prevention (training can be provided on the job)
- Collaborative, with enthusiasm for working alongside other specialties and healthcare executives on quality improvement initiatives
- Supportive of trainee development and multidisciplinary communication
- An interest in research is not required, though faculty who wish to pursue VA, NIH, or other funding opportunities will receive full support at any career stage.
Requirements:
- MD, MD/PhD, DO, MBBS or equivalent
- Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases
- Eligibility for a State of Missouri Medical License
- Qualifications to obtain VA credentialing
