The Medical Director provides clinical oversight and physician and advanced practice provider leadership for outpatient ambulatory clinics. This position combines direct patient care with administrative and operational responsibilities related to clinical quality, regulatory compliance, provider engagement, and performance outcomes. The role collaborates with UPG and UVAH leadership to align clinical practice with organizational goals and standards. Reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Medical Director provides clinical oversight and leadership for physicians and advanced practice providers. The role ensures consistent standards of care, regulatory compliance, and alignment with UPG and UVA Health clinical protocols and quality expectations.
The position supports provider performance and engagement through clinical guidance, mentorship, and participation in onboarding and professional development. The Medical Director partners with operational and administrative leaders to support clinical workflows, access quality improvement, and population health initiatives within an ambulatory care environment.
The role serves as a clinical liaison to UPG and UVA Health leadership, contributing clinical input to performance monitoring, operational decisions, and strategic initiatives to improve patient outcomes and provider experience.
Clinical Responsibilities
Provide clinical leadership and direction to ensure consistent standards of care. Clinical responsibilities and patient panel composition will align with the incumbents clinical discipline, credentialing, and scope of practice.
Support and mentor providers and assist with onboarding and clinical education. Serve as a resource for clinical protocols, documentation standards, and clinical workflows.
Maintain a panel of patients and fulfill clinical duties as scheduled. Function as an EMR resource and superuser.
Administrative and Operational Responsibilities
Participate in planning and implementation of operational initiatives. Ensure adherence to organizational policies, clinic regulations, and medical staff bylaws.
Participate in provider recruitment, selection, and retention efforts. Assist with addressing provider performance concerns and supporting resolution processes.
Collaborate with UPG and UVA Health leaders on strategic priorities, service line development, and program advancement.
Quality and Population Health Responsibilities
Accountable for monitoring key clinical quality, safety, and performance metrics and driving improvement actions as needed.
Lead efforts related to clinical outcomes, patient safety, and continuous improvement.
Review clinical performance data and facilitate corrective action where needed.
Implement evidence-based practices and performance benchmarks.
Support value-based care, population health initiatives, and community wellness priorities.
Provider Engagement and Coordination
Facilitate effective communication between clinical teams and administrative leadership.
Promote collaboration across providers and allied health professionals.
Represent clinical perspectives in decision-making and operational planning.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides clinical oversight and leadership for an interdisciplinary care team supporting ambulatory clinic operations, which may include pharmacists, advanced practice providers, behavioral health providers, and nursing care coordinators.
May participate in performance feedback development and coordination of team activities in collaboration with operational leadership.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to perform clinical and administrative duties in an outpatient ambulatory setting, including prolonged periods of standing and walking, occasional bending, reaching, and repetitive use of hands for computer and clinical tasks.
