    Medical Assistant (PRN) Job Description

    Position Title:

    Medical Assistant (PRN)

    Position Summary

    The PRN Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to physicians and healthcare staff on an as-needed basis. This position assists with patient care, ensures efficient clinic operations, and supports the organization's mission of delivering exceptional patient-centered care. The PRN Medical Assistant must be flexible and available to work varying schedules based on operational needs.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Clinical Responsibilities

    • Room patients and obtain vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight.
    • Document patient histories, medications, allergies, and chief complaints in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
    • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
    • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during examinations and minor procedures.
    • Perform specimen collection, point-of-care testing, injections, and other clinical duties within scope of practice.
    • Process laboratory orders and ensure proper specimen handling and documentation.
    • Provide patient education regarding medications, procedures, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions.
    • Clean, stock, and prepare examination rooms and clinical equipment.
    • Maintain infection prevention and safety standards consistent with organizational policies.

    Administrative Responsibilities

    • Schedule patient appointments and coordinate referrals as needed.
    • Verify patient information and assist with registration processes.
    • Manage telephone calls, patient messages, and prescription refill requests according to established protocols.
    • Assist with prior authorizations, medical records requests, and other administrative tasks.
    • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EHR.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent clinical experience.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare operations.
    • Proficiency with electronic health records and Microsoft Office applications.
    • Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.

    Preferred

    • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent credential.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of outpatient clinic experience.
    • Urology, surgical specialty, or ambulatory care experience preferred.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
    • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
    • Ability to perform repetitive motions and maintain visual acuity for documentation and patient care activities.

    Work Environment

    • Fast-paced outpatient medical practice.
    • Frequent interaction with patients, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members.
    • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids requiring adherence to standard precautions.

    Schedule

    • PRN (as needed) position with no guaranteed hours.
    • Flexible availability to cover staff absences, increased patient volumes, and operational needs.
    • May include weekdays, evenings, and occasional weekends based on clinic requirements.
