Job Title: Medical AssistantJob Description

This role provides direct clinical and administrative support in a primary care clinic, working closely with an assigned physician to ensure efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and high-quality patient care. The Medical Assistant performs rooming, vital signs, testing, and follow-up activities while effectively using the electronic medical record system.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients efficiently and prepare them for examinations, ensuring all necessary information and documentation are collected.
  • Perform patient check-in and check-out procedures, including verifying information and coordinating follow-up needs.
  • Order laboratory tests accurately according to physician instructions and clinic protocols.
  • Handle patient follow-up activities, including managing incoming calls, relaying messages, and providing updates as directed by the physician.
  • Measure and record vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and other relevant clinical data.
  • Prepare exam rooms before each patient visit, ensuring cleanliness, proper supplies, and readiness for procedures.
  • Conduct point-of-care (POC) testing as ordered, documenting results accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Stock shelves and maintain supplies, performing standard office and clinical support tasks to keep the clinic organized and efficient.
  • Utilize the electronic medical record (EMR) system to document patient encounters, update charts, and support clinical workflows.
  • Process medication refill requests in accordance with clinic policies and physician guidance.
  • Perform phlebotomy when needed, including blood draws and specimen handling, if qualified.
  • Collaborate closely with the physician and clinic team to support smooth daily operations and a positive patient experience.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated medical assisting skills in a clinical or primary care setting.
  • Ability to room patients, obtain and record vital signs, and prepare exam rooms.
  • Proficiency in performing point-of-care (POC) testing and accurately documenting results.
  • Experience using an electronic medical record (EMR) system to manage patient information.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing patient check-in, check-out, and follow-up activities.
  • Effective communication skills for handling incoming patient calls and coordinating messages.
  • Capability to support medication refill processes in alignment with clinical guidelines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using Cerner/PowerChart EMR is highly preferred.
  • Phlebotomy skills are preferred but not required for the role.
  • Ability to perform blood draws and manage lab specimens is an asset.
  • Comfort working in a primary care provider (PCP) clinic environment.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in clinical documentation and lab ordering.

Work Environment

This position is based in an office-style primary care clinic operating Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Medical Assistant typically supports a manageable patient volume of approximately 8 to 12 patients per day, allowing for thorough and attentive care. The role involves working closely with a physician and clinic staff in a professional, team-oriented setting that relies on an electronic medical record system, including Cerner/PowerChart where applicable. The environment combines clinical tasks such as vital signs, POC testing, and occasional phlebotomy with administrative duties like check-in, check-out, and patient follow-up, all within a structured daytime schedule.

This is a Contract position based out of Knoxville, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
