Medical Assistant II - MOB 540 Colon Rectal Surgery - Part Time - Days

Provide clinical support to physicians and advanced practice providers in a busy surgical specialty practice. This position is responsible for delivering excellent patient care while ensuring efficient clinic flow. The MA performs patient intake, assists with examinations and minor procedures, coordinates testing and referrals, communicates with patients, and maintains accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree and/or Certified/Registered MA preferred. Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or previous Medical Assisting experience required.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 2 to 5 years MA or other relevant experience preferred; Practice in different care settings (eg. Primary care, Specialty, EMT, etc.).

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, EMR and scheduling systems) required. Strong verbal and social skills to facilitate working respectfully with patients, physicians, visitors, co-workers, and drug reps in person or by telephone required. Ability and willingness to travel to other physician offices as requested or needed. Complementary clinical skills such as phlebotomy, performing EKGs, stiches removal, splinting, etc. are highly preferred.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

Certified/Registered MA preferred. Must successfully complete skills orientation. BLS certification required.

Maintains patient flow during clinic hours. Prepares patients for provider examinations by obtaining and documenting review of systems, vital signs (see Appendix A for specifics), medications, allergies, and past and current medical, surgical, social, and family history. Accurately documents patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR). Assists providers during anorectal procedures, including anoscopy, rigid proctoscopy, and external rectal examinations. Sets up and assists with the Bovie electrosurgical unit and Infrared Coagulation (IRC) machine during office procedures. May assist in training new employees. Provide exceptional patient care.

Prepares patient charts in the EMR by reviewing records and ensuring all pertinent diagnostic test results, pathology reports, operative notes, hospital records, and other medical information are available for the provider prior to each patient visit. Obtains records from outside facilities as needed. May serve as an EMR Super User.

Prepares examination and procedure rooms by ensuring rooms are clean, organized, appropriately stocked, and ready for patient care. Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes instruments according to infection prevention standards and manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs). Orders clinical and procedural supplies as needed. Processes pathology specimens and ensures accurate labeling and documentation. Completes patient assistance paperwork as assigned.

Communicates with patients and coordinates clinical care by returning patient calls, responding to MyChart messages, managing in-baskets, telephone encounters, daily workflow logs, and work queues within the EMR/Practice Management system. Assists with scheduling appointments, coordinating diagnostic testing, obtaining referrals and prior authorizations, and completing prescription prior authorizations as needed.

Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following organizational policies, infection prevention standards, and regulatory requirements. Protects patient confidentiality, understands the legal responsibilities of the Medical Assistant role, and supports quality initiatives and an exceptional patient experience through compassionate, respectful, and professional care.
