Description

Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain patient flow during clinic hours.
  • Document review of systems and measure vital signs such as pulse rate, respirations, blood pressure, weight, and height.
  • Update past and current medical, social, and family history; review medications and update medication list at each visit.
  • Correctly record patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Assist in training of new employees.
  • Prepare patient charts in EMR for visits by scanning, abstracting, and reviewing to ensure all necessary diagnostic test results and medical records are included.
  • Access and navigate websites or contact outside facilities to obtain necessary information.
  • Act as Super User for Electronic Medical Record as needed.
  • Refill medications and pre-authorize medications, communicating with patients, pharmacies, or insurance companies as required.
  • Maintain recording of patient samples and other medications, and dispose of expired medications.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for examination of patients and maintain clean, fully supplied exam rooms.
  • Order medical supplies as needed.
  • Complete patient assistance paperwork and requests as needed.
  • Obtain pertinent medical information from patients to facilitate medical decision-making per specific office protocol procedures.
  • Return calls and respond to MyChart as needed.
  • Work in-baskets, daily workflow logs, and work queues in EMR/Practice Management system.
  • Coordinate and oversee work queues in the office.
  • Answer incoming calls, schedule appointments, check-in and out patients, and complete pre-certifications for prescriptions, procedures, and surgeries as needed.
  • Operate EKG, cardiac monitors, and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Perform other clinical duties such as administering vaccinations, phlebotomy, and cast removal as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures, and complying with legal regulations.
  • Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
  • Understand and adhere to the legal responsibilities and requirements of the medical assistant role.
  • Demonstrate comprehension and support of quality measures and patient experience.

Skills

Required Skills & Experience

  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, EMR, and scheduling systems).
  • Strong verbal and social skills to facilitate working respectfully with patients, physicians, visitors, co-workers, and drug reps in person or by telephone.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to other physician offices as requested or needed.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Two (2) to five (5) years of Medical Assistant or other relevant experience.
  • Practice in different care settings (e.g., Primary care, Specialty, EMT, etc.).
  • Complementary clinical skills such as phlebotomy, performing EKGs, stitches removal, splinting, etc.

Education

Required Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program.

Preferred Education

  • Associate degree.

Certifications & Licensure

  • BLS

Preferred Certifications & Licensure

  • Certified/Registered Medical Assistant from a certifying body.
