Medical Assistant – Orthopaedics
Position Summary
The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to physicians and clinical staff in an orthopaedic practice. This position is responsible for assisting with patient care, preparing patients for examinations and procedures, maintaining accurate medical records, and supporting the efficient flow of patients through the clinic. The Medical Assistant should demonstrate professionalism, compassion, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of orthopaedic patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Care
Greet and room patients in a professional and courteous manner.
Obtain and document patient medical histories, medications, allergies, vital signs, and other pertinent information.
Prepare patients for examinations, procedures, injections, and other treatments.
Assist physicians and other clinical providers with examinations and procedures as needed.
Assist with casting, splinting, bracing, dressing changes, suture/staple removal, and other orthopaedic procedures as directed.
Prepare and position patients appropriately for examinations and procedures.
Provide patient education and instructions regarding medications, treatment plans, wound care, activity restrictions, follow-up appointments, and other physician recommendations.
Monitor patients during and after procedures and report any changes or concerns to the physician or appropriate clinical staff.
Assist with obtaining specimens and performing approved clinical tests.
Perform point-of-care testing and other clinical duties within the scope of training and certification.
Orthopaedic Clinical Support
Assist with the care of patients with orthopaedic injuries and conditions involving the spine, joints, muscles, bones, and extremities.
Assist with fracture care, wound care, injections, and other orthopaedic treatments.
Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, and other orthopaedic devices as directed and within scope of practice.
Assist with crutch, brace, and durable medical equipment education when appropriate.
Prepare equipment and supplies for procedures and ensure examination rooms are properly stocked.
Clean, disinfect, and maintain clinical equipment and treatment areas according to practice standards.
Assist with obtaining and preparing radiographs or other diagnostic information when applicable and within training.
Documentation and Administrative Responsibilities
Document patient care and clinical information accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
Enter physician orders, prescriptions, referrals, and other information as directed and within established procedures.
Assist with prescription requests, medical records, referrals, authorizations, and other patient-care-related tasks.
Communicate with patients regarding appointments, test results, treatment instructions, and other clinical matters as directed by the physician.
Assist with coordinating follow-up appointments and other services required as part of the patient's treatment plan.
Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and practice policies.
Complete required documentation accurately and within established timeframes.
Teamwork and Patient Flow
Work collaboratively with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, other Medical Assistants, and administrative staff.
Maintain efficient patient flow and communicate delays or patient concerns to the appropriate team member.
Anticipate the needs of the physician and clinical team.
Assist other clinical staff and departments when needed.
Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to work in a fast-paced orthopaedic environment.
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional clinical environment.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
Current Medical Assistant certification preferred or required based on applicable practice standards.
Current CPR/BLS certification required or must be obtained within the required timeframe.
Previous medical office or clinical experience preferred; orthopaedic experience is a plus.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology and clinical procedures.
Proficiency with electronic medical records and basic computer systems preferred.

Work Environment
The Medical Assistant works primarily in an outpatient orthopaedic clinic and may interact with patients of all ages and varying levels of mobility. The position requires frequent interaction with physicians, clinical staff, patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team.
