Job Title: Mechanical Technician

Job Description

This onsite Mechanical Technician role supports a fast-paced prototyping environment that brings new hardware ideas to life. You will work hands-on with industrial-grade CNC machining equipment to produce complex prototype parts, support mechanical and electrical design teams, and help ensure high-quality, on-time delivery. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with product design and industrial design teams, contributing directly to the development and testing of cutting-edge technologies. Candidates with a strong interest in making things and experience in digital design or machining are encouraged to apply, and training will be provided on the specific tools and processes used in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Operate industrial-grade CNC machining equipment to produce prototype parts with high accuracy and quality.
  • Program parts using templated CAM programs, adjusting parameters as needed to meet design and manufacturing requirements.
  • Support prototype machining and fabrication activities, including setup, tooling changes, and basic maintenance of equipment.
  • Collaborate closely with product design and industrial design teams to understand design intent and translate it into manufacturable parts.
  • Participate in the full prototyping process, including machining, assembly, repair, and related mechanical build activities as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with internal customers to clarify requirements, provide status updates, and manage expectations.
  • Ensure that all assigned work meets required timelines and quality standards, helping the team consistently deliver on-time.
  • Work with complex geometries and compressed development timelines, finding efficient methods to realize designs in real materials.
  • Apply sound judgment and follow established procedures to work safely, protect equipment, and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Adhere to company policies and standards while supporting a culture of trust, respect, and collaboration within the prototyping team.

Essential Skills

  • 1-2 years minimum hands-on experience in machining, with 3-5 years preferred.
  • Practical experience operating CNC machining equipment in a shop or prototyping environment.
  • Experience with CAM programming, including the use of templated CAM programs to generate toolpaths.
  • Ability to work with prototype parts and complex geometries while maintaining precision and quality.
  • Demonstrated shop experience that may substitute for formal education when equivalent.
  • Strong interest in mechanical fabrication and making things, with a focus on practical problem-solving.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with internal customers and team members regarding requirements, issues, and project status.
  • Capability to manage time effectively and meet tight deadlines in a fast-moving development environment.
  • Commitment to working safely, following procedures, and exercising sound judgment in a shop setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred, but not required with equivalent shop experience.
  • Familiarity with digital design concepts that support CNC machining and prototyping.
  • Experience working in a prototype or product development environment supporting hardware teams.
  • Ability to support related processes such as assembly, repair, and basic mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in delivering high-quality prototype parts and services to internal partners.

Work Environment

This position is fully onsite, five days per week, in a prototyping and machining facility located in Sunnyvale, CA. You will work in a hands-on shop environment with industrial-grade CNC machines and related equipment used for machining, printing, casting, molding, assembly, laser processing, and repair. The work is fast-paced and highly collaborative, with frequent interaction with product design and industrial design teams. The environment emphasizes safety, precision, and efficiency while supporting innovative hardware development on compressed timelines. Appropriate shop attire and adherence to safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment where required, are expected.

This is a Contract position based out of Sunnyvale, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $30.00/hr.
