Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) uses a one-of-a-kind linear accelerator to deliver proton beams at 84% the speed of light to spallation neutron targets for scientific and national defense applications. Multiple beam facility upgrades are already underway at LANSCE to develop and modernize capabilities that support LANL's unique deterrence mission.
Among other responsibilities, the Target Experimental and Support Team (AOT-OPS:TESTeam) spearheads the design, development, and construction of experimental end stations aimed at understanding dynamic materials in extreme environments in support of the deterrence mission. This requires a wide range of demolition and disposal (D&D), tradecraft, and construction skills employed in hazardous environments. TESTeam seeks a hands-on, problem solving mechanical or electrical technician who thrives in a collaborative, high-impact R&D environment to support this facility development initiative.
This unique opportunity is the first of its kind at LANSCE in decades. The technician candidate selected to join TESTeam will be executing a full gamut of beamline D&D, assembly, testing, fielding, evaluation, benchmarking, and documentation efforts.
This position will focus on the following scope:
- Welding
- Machining and fabrication
- Material handling
- Radiological work
- Vacuum/pressure system fabrication
- Remote handling services utilizing robotic tools
- D&D of legacy accelerator components and associated equipment
- Assembly, deployment, testing, and benchmarking beamline and facility components
- Integration of new components with existing systems (controls, electrical, vacuum, plumbing, etc.)
- Heavy equipment operation (forklifts, cranes) to place bulk shielding
Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($54,900 - $84,300)- Operate cranes and forklifts.
- D&D complex legacy systems in radiological environments.
- Assemble, test, and field complex systems of piping, vacuum, sensors, and large diagnostics.
- Troubleshoot mechanical hardware, sensors, and controls.
- Update existing technical work control documentation.
Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($66,100 - $103,600)- Perform EST-3 duties with less oversight.
- Develop technical solutions to complex problems.
- Independently troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and controls systems.
- Evaluate existing beamline devices for proper functionality.
- Collect physics design benchmarking data to refine testing plans, simulation capability, and increase design fidelity.
- Produce new technical work control documentation.
