    Purpose:


    Manage the Flow Control Systems Engineering Department based in Champaign, Illinois (CP)


    Direct Reports:


    Three Mechanical Engineers and one VIE Engineer


    Dimensions of Position:


    • Manages, plans and delegates assignments, including reviewing the progress and evaluating the results of assigned work.

    • Assigns and monitors design and adaptation of mechanical equipment for customer Feasibility Studies/Proposals and Installations.

    • Oversees product release from R & D which may include review of designs, development of options and accessories, and update or generation of installation, operation, and maintenance manuals.

    • Investigates and implements continuing product improvements based on field and manufacturing requests.

    • Performs design and adaptation of mechanical equipment for customer requirements.

    • May generate new and revised drawings using Draftsight and SolidWorks.

    • Performs checking as required.

    • Reviews evaluations and responses for customer complaints.

    • Provides technical assistance to Project Managers and Sales Regions regarding product applications, scope of supply, installation and servicing.

    • Provides technical assistance to Manufacturing, Q.C., Purchasing and Suppliers.

    • Stays current on applicable design technology.

    • Complies with Flow Control Systems Engineering quality management system.

    • Identifies opportunities for improvement and implements department process improvements.

    • Project Management - Plan, schedule and manage resources to meet customer deadlines and technical requirements

    • Comply with quality management procedures and department procedures and guidelines.

    • Identifies opportunities for improvement and implement department process improvements.

    • Work in a manner which aims to ensure the health and safety of employees, contractors, visitors, customers, and any other persons affected by these activities.


    Qualifications:


    A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.


    Experience:


    Prefer at least 10 years’ experience in manufacturing or industrial field with 3 years' experience with Vesuvius or similar steel industry related company.


    Knowledge:


    • Knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Creo)

    • Knowledge of engineering and design of mechanical and hydraulic equipment.

    • Knowledge of computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook, SharePoint)

    • Knowledge of Steel making processes helpful.

    • Knowledge of Ladle and Tundish flow control systems helpful.

    • Knowledge of automated controls helpful.


    Skills & Behavior:


    • Management ability.

    • Must be able to travel (Away from office up to 15% of the time)

    • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.

    • Able to work under pressure, accept change and communicate problems to supervisor.

    • Must be able to get around in a steel mill environment.

    • Ability to interact effectively with others, in particular with department personnel, Suppliers, Manufacturing, Sales, Regions and Customers.


    Competency Requirements:


    • Technical Expertise

    Ability to design and engineer mechanical and hydraulic equipment which meets customer requirements for performance, safety, cost and reliability. Knowledge of steel mill processes and environment.


    • Decision Making

    Make decisions on mechanical and hydraulic design, including component and material selection. Make decisions related to drawings and specifications. Make decisions on acceptability of used or nonconforming product. Make decisions regarding resource allocation. Make personnel decisions.


    •Planning / Development

    Plan and delegate departmental assignments. Plan departmental requirements. Develop TSR planning and tech reviews. Develop department procedures. Evaluates impact of changes.


    • Communication

    Responsible for distributing all formal documentation (procedures, management communications, etc.) coming to the Flow Control Systems Engineering Department. Responsible for major interdepartmental communications. Must interact with other departments and Vesuvius Flow Control Engineering locations

    (GH, WN, RJ) for major projects. Ability to effectively request and provide information to Department and Company Personnel, Suppliers, and Customers.


    • Managing / Leadership

    Formally supervises Flow Control Systems Engineering Department. Interviews and evaluates potential employees for the Flow Control Systems Engineering Department. Develops, interprets and ensures the consistent application of organizational policies. Develops, coaches or mentors staff. Engages in typical

    responsibilities of a manager requiring planning, evaluating, organizing, integrating and controlling.
