Job Description: This Mechanical Design Engineer role sits within the Value Engineering function of the Continuing Engineering Group, supporting the installed base of released semiconductor test ATE platforms. The engineer will lead small-scale cost reduction projects — redesigning parts and assemblies to lower cost through simplification, design optimization, or alternative manufacturing methods — while also investigating and resolving broader production and customer issues affecting fielded systems. This role requires an experienced, hands-on engineer who can own projects end-to-end, from concept through vendor qualification, documentation, and release, with support scaled to project size.
Responsibilities
Lead small to medium-sized cost reduction (Value Engineering) projects, redesigning parts and assemblies for lower cost through simplification, design optimization, or alternative manufacturing methods
Own projects across their full lifecycle — concept, design, vendor qualification, documentation, and release — with support as needed depending on project scope
Lead the timely and efficient resolution of factory “line-down” issues, taking ownership from issue identification through deployment of the solution
Investigate and resolve production and customer issues involving released products
Generate and implement Engineering Change Orders and Engineering Change Notices (ECOs/ECNs)
Generate engineering specifications, detailed drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and assemblies
Apply Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles
Coordinate prototype procurement and vendor selection, including qualification of alternative vendors/processes for cost-reduced designs
Coordinate material rework activities
Participate in and drive safety-related escalations
Participate in design reviews and other required meetings
Work closely with engineers across the Continuing Engineering Group and integrate with cross-functional teams across the semiconductor test organization
Apply knowledge of product development and manufacturing processes
Must Have:
Minimum of 10 years of directly relevant experience
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME)
Experience in electromechanical packaging layout and design, including sheet metal, plastics, cabling, and printed circuit boards
Demonstrated proficiency with general drafting and design standards, including ANSI Y14.5 and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
Demonstrated proficiency with SolidWorks
Working knowledge of compliance and regulatory design requirements
Ability to investigate technical fit and fabrication problems through tolerance analysis
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
Self-motivated, team-oriented, and hands-on approach
Excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships across cross-functional groups
Travel Requirement
Ability to travel internationally is required, but such travel is not likely to be on a regular basis.
