Supplemental Job Description:

Role Overview: We are seeking a dedicated Mechanical/Test Engineer to provide end-to-end hardware development, integration, and testing support for an upcoming hardware product lifecycle. This role is critical for driving prototyping execution, finalizing engineering validation designs, and ensuring seamless continuity for the core engineering team during a critical build phase.

  1. Job Duties

Mechanical Design & Maturation: Take ownership of in-flight mechanical designs-spanning machined components, sheet metal parts, and fabricated assemblies like welded tube frames-and drive them to maturity. Assist with the broader design and layout of electromechanical subsystems.

System Integration & Packaging: Define board interfaces, establish keep-out zones, and manage structural layouts for early prototypes to prevent downstream redesigns in later validation phases.

Prototyping & Assembly: Own the physical assembly, mechanical fit-checks, and debugging of prototype builds. Manage corresponding BOMs to ensure configuration consistency across iterations and mitigate risks from accelerated project schedules.

Testing & Compliance Support: Support design verification and pre-certification testing (such as EMI/EMC) by designing, procuring, and assembling custom mechanical test fixtures. Ensure testing setups are robust and reliable to prevent late-stage validation delays, and support field testing initiatives to gather actionable performance data.

Design Release & BOM management: Finalize mechanical drawings and enforce strict design freezes for upcoming manufacturing builds. Evaluate engineering trade-offs between utilizing off-the-shelf/legacy components versus custom optimization to balance unit cost and production volume targets. Support in managing/building the system BOM.

Cross-Functional & Vendor Collaboration: Work closely with internal design teams and external engineering partners to troubleshoot issues, communicate design requirements, and support international deployment scopes.

  1. Preferred Skills

Advanced CAD & Drafting Proficiency: Deep experience with 3D CAD tools (Onshape preferred) for sub-system prototyping and production design. Highly proficient in GD&T, 2D drawing creation, and managing the part-release process for external manufacturing (accommodating standard 1-2 month lead times).

Manufacturing & Fabrication Knowledge: Strong understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM) across a variety of processes, specifically CNC machining, sheet metal forming, and structural weldments/tube frames.

Hands-on Lab & Build Experience: Strong mechanical intuition with a proven track record of assembling hardware prototypes, conducting functional fit-checks, and operating specialized lab test equipment and mechanical tools with minimal supervision.

Fixture Design & Test Strategy: Familiarity with hardware test strategies. Specific experience designing and building mechanical fixtures to support electrical, thermal, or compliance (EMI/EMC) lab testing is highly desirable.

Simulation Familiarity: Capable of running first-pass structural simulations (ANSYS Workbench preferred) and collaborating effectively with dedicated analysts to interpret and act on the results.

Analytical & Communication Skills: Strong data analysis capabilities to identify gaps and execute immediate action plans. Excellent communication skills for managing interactions with external vendors and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced hardware environment.
