Mechanical Engineer II

Position Overview

Finish Line Staffing Services is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to design, develop, test, and optimize mechanical systems, components, and assemblies throughout the product development lifecycle. This position involves taking product concepts from initial specifications through 3D CAD modeling, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing. The ideal candidate has hands-on commercial product development experience, strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, and proficiency in 3D CAD software, GD&T, and manufacturing processes. This role supports fast-paced research and development (R&D) projects and requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing project requirements, and work effectively across engineering disciplines.Candidates must have direct, hands-on experience designing physical hardware from initial concept through functional, manufactured products. Experience focused primarily on academic research, theoretical engineering, or instruction without practical commercial product development experience will not meet the requirements of this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and analyze mechanical components, enclosures, structural weldments, mechanisms, and moving assemblies.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models, 2D manufacturing drawings, assembly documentation, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Select appropriate materials, hardware, and manufacturing processes based on cost, lead time, weight, and performance requirements.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance stack-up analyses, structural stress analyses, and basic thermal calculations.
  • Build, assemble, and evaluate functional prototypes using machine shop tools, rapid prototyping equipment, and precision measurement instruments.
  • Develop and execute mechanical verification test plans, including structural, thermal, vibration, lifecycle, and environmental testing.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical failures, fitment issues, and performance concerns through root cause analysis.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to improve production efficiency and product reliability.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable industry standards and safety requirements, including ASME, ASTM, ISO, OSHA, UL, and CE, as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation, revision control, and Engineering Change Orders/Notices (ECO/ECN).
  • Collaborate with electrical, firmware, software, and other engineering teams to integrate mechanical and electronic systems.
  • Partner with contract manufacturers, tooling suppliers, and production teams to resolve manufacturing challenges and support first-article inspections.
  • Provide technical guidance to assembly technicians and machinists during prototype builds and production setups.
  • Manage multiple concurrent R&D projects while meeting critical development and delivery deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field. Equivalent military training or substantial hands-on mechanical design experience will also be considered.
  • 2–5 years of professional mechanical design and commercial product development experience; relevant internships or co-op experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing physical products from concept through prototyping, testing, and manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in parametric 3D CAD modeling and drafting software, such as SolidWorks.
  • Strong understanding of ASME Y14.5 drafting standards and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Hands-on experience with workshop equipment, hand tools, and precision measurement instruments, including calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, including CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, additive manufacturing, injection molding, and mechanical fastening methods.
  • Understanding of mechanical design calculations, material selection, and manufacturing tolerances.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and mechanical problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate engineering documentation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical teams.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and manage multiple fast-turnaround development projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools, such as ANSYS or SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Experience designing electromechanical systems, motor-driven mechanisms, or thermal management solutions.
  • Familiarity with CNC machining, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping technologies.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience designing injection-molded plastic components, stamped parts, or castings, including tooling and mold-flow considerations.
