JOB DESCRIPTION: Mechanical Drafter (SolidWorks & PDM)
Position Overview
The Mechanical Drafter is responsible for creating precise 3D models and 2D technical drawings that serve as the blueprint for production. This role acts as the technical link between Engineering and the Manufacturing floor, utilizing SolidWorks PDM for data integrity and GD&T to ensure high-precision manufacturing.
Core Responsibilities
1. Drafting & Design (SolidWorks)
- Create high-fidelity 3D parts and complex assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Generate detailed 2D production drawings, including exploded views, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and detailed annotations.
- Maintain and update the standard library of components and hardware.
2. GD&T & Technical Standards
- Apply ASME Y14.5 standards to all engineering drawings.
- Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure the functionality and fit of mating parts.
- Define critical dimensions and datums to streamline the Quality Control (QC) inspection process.
3. Data Management (PDM)
- Manage the lifecycle of technical data within SolidWorks PDM (check-in/out, versioning, and state changes).
- Execute Engineering Change Orders (ECO) and Engineering Change Requests (ECR) with high attention to detail.
- Ensure all metadata and custom properties are correctly populated for ERP/MRP system integration.
4. Manufacturing (Mfg) Support
- Partner with the shop floor to provide "Design for Manufacturing" (DFM) feedback.
- Troubleshoot production issues by providing rapid "redline" updates to drawings.
- Design custom jigs, fixtures, and tooling to assist in the assembly and fabrication process.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Technical: 3+ years of professional experience with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.
- Expertise: Advanced knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles.
- Education: Associate’s Degree in Drafting, CAD Technology, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent work experience).
- Communication: Ability to translate complex engineering concepts into clear instructions for machinists and welders.
Preferred Certifications
- CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional).
- ASME GDTP (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professional).
