Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Carrier Servicing Operations (CSO) is seeking an entry level mechanical engineer to join our team. CSO designs, maintains, and supports the reactor servicing system for the Navy's NIMITZ Class aircraft carriers during their mid-life refuelings and end-of-life inactivations. This challenging, yet rewarding, position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development and improvement of systems that address the unique challenges of carrier reactor servicing.  

 

Key responsibilities include:
•    Developing and improving reactor servicing procedures.
•    Designing and modifying equipment, including creating and manipulating CAD models, conducting structural analyses, performing fit-up studies, and producing detailed technical drawings.
•    Providing off-yard field support for ongoing shipyard servicing activities.
•    Supporting Program project management to ensure the unit meets delivery and re-delivery goals for these critical assets.
•    Up to 10% travel to Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) may be available.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field; or
  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field.

Preferred Skills

  • Degrees in Mechanical engineering are preferred, but not required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with peers and supporting teams.
  • Understanding of basic project management principles.
  • CREO Modeling, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and basic Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Pay Range

$63,900.00 - $97,800.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets.
