Summary

The primary role of the Mechanical Designer is to create accurate 3D models and fabrication drawings for pressure vessels, structural steel, piping, and P&IDs using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD. This role supports projects from concept through fabrication and shipment, checks drawings before they are issued to customers and the fabrication shop, and mentors drafters. You will report directly to the Design Manager.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Create 3D models and extract fully dimensioned 2D fabrication drawings with weld symbols, bills of materials, and other details needed by the shop

• Develop designs from initial concept through final drawings, including pressure vessels, structural steel, mechanical components, and piping

• Check drawings for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards, including ASME Y14.7

• Support projects from receipt of order through fabrication and shipment, addressing shop questions and design changes as they arise

• Manage drawing deliverables for multiple projects while meeting project timelines

• Participate in internal and customer design reviews

• Identify ways to improve design processes and communication between engineering and fabrication

Required:

• High school diploma and/or extended education in drafting, design, and 3D software

• Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD

• Experience developing complete drawing sets for structural and mechanical designs, ASME code pressure vessels, and piping

• Experience with ASME Y14.5, ASME Section VIII Div. 1, AISC, SID, and OSHA requirements

• Strong understanding and correct application of welding symbols

• Ability to review customer specifications and prepare accurate technical documentation, including bills of materials, weld maps, engineering reports, compliance documents, and engineering change notices

• Proven experience supporting a fabrication shop with accurate, constructible drawings and details

• Ability to read and write English and communicate effectively with customers, team members, and shop personnel

Preferred:

• Experience using COMPRESS calculations to develop ASME code vessel detail drawings

• Experience with Autodesk Inventor iLogic and Autodesk Vault

Physical Requirements and other items to communicate:

• The ability to lift 50 pounds. Work in a high pace manufacturing environment. Have the ability to multitask by sharing workspace with interruptions from others.
