Our client is a national leader in NETA testing, commissioning, and staff augmentation for the mission-critical industry. They are adding a Mechanical Commissioning Manager in Montgomery, AL to own the mechanical commissioning scope on data center projects, from design review through integrated systems testing and turnover.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who knows how cooling plants work, how they fail, and how to prove they won't. If you came up through Navy Nuclear as a mechanical rate or hold a Mechanical Engineering degree, and you've already commissioned data centers, this one is worth a conversation.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead mechanical commissioning across Levels 1–5: factory witness testing, installation verification, pre-functional checks, functional performance testing, and integrated systems testing (IST).
- Review mechanical design documents, submittals, and sequences of operation for commissionability, redundancy, and owner project requirements.
- Build and execute commissioning plans, checklists, and functional test scripts for chilled water plants, chillers, cooling towers, CRAHs/CRACs, air handlers, pumps, heat rejection, and liquid cooling systems.
- Verify BMS/controls sequences, alarms, and failover behavior with controls contractors, and confirm TAB results against design.
- Run commissioning meetings and coordinate daily with the GC, mechanical trades, owner representatives, and the electrical commissioning team.
- Track issues to closure in the commissioning issues log (CxAlloy, BlueRithm, or similar) and hold trades accountable to schedule.
- Lead and mentor mechanical commissioning technicians and agents on site.
- Produce test documentation, commissioning reports, and turnover packages the owner can operate from.
- Set the standard for site safety, including LOTO and energized-equipment procedures.
WHAT YOU BRING
- A strong mechanical background from one of these paths: U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program in a mechanical rate (e.g., Machinist's Mate – Nuclear), or a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Data center commissioning experience. This is required.
- Working knowledge of chilled water systems, HVAC equipment, controls, and TAB in a mission-critical environment.
- Experience writing and running functional test scripts and leading IST events.
- Ability to lead multi-trade teams and hold a jobsite to a schedule.
- Clear written reporting and comfort presenting results to owners and GCs.
- Ability to work on site in Montgomery, AL.
NICE TO HAVE
- Commissioning certification (CxA, CCP, BCxP, or similar), or PE/EIT.
- Hyperscale or colocation project experience.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE Guideline 0 and 1.1 and Uptime Institute tier concepts.
- Working knowledge of electrical commissioning and how it ties to mechanical IST.
- OSHA 30.
SCHEDULE & BENEFITS
- 5-10s schedule (five 10-hour days), with 10 hours of overtime every week.
- Per diem paid 7 days per week.
- 15 days of PTO.
- Full medical benefits.
- Major holidays paid, plus a floating holiday and Veterans Day.
