Description

The Dougherty County Solid Waste department is hiring for a Mechanic III. The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance and complex repairs on all county vehicles and equipment. Employee will report directly to the Heavy Equipment Maintenance Manager.

This class works under close to general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential Tasks

  • Uses diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems on vehicle.
  • Services vehicles according to established routine maintenance.
  • Performs complex repairs on county vehicles, including heavy equipment such as repairing brakes, replacing and repairing engines and transmissions, repairing electrical and air conditioning systems.
  • Provides roadside assistance.
  • Performs general maintenance on diesel engines, light trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Maintains service logs and records.
  • Keeps work area clean and tidy.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Must possess own tools.

Minimum Qualification

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in gasoline/diesel mechanic, heavy equipment or small engine repair or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Supplemental Information

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

o Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

o Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

o Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

o Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

o Traffic; Moving machinery.

o Electrical shock; Heights.

Special Certifications And Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state Class B, driver's license with Hazardous Material Endorsement (HME) or be able to obtain endorsement with the first six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires ASE or TMAC certifications.
