JOB SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the Shop Supervisor, responsible for performing routine and preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment and vehicles.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

• Performs preventive maintenance necessary to ensure the proper functioning of vehicles and/or heavy equipment, mechanical systems, and component parts
• Performs vehicle and medium-heavy truck diagnostics using scan tools and laptop computer
• Performs major and minor repairs on all air conditioning systems including automotive, medium-heavy, and heavy trucks
• Performs major and minor mechanical work, including but not limited to, repair and replace water/fuel pumps, radiators, alternators, differentials, timing chains, belts, hoses, fuses, valves, and batteries
• Operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools
• Operates a variety of machinery such as computerized tire balancing machine, tire mount/dismount machine, and front-end alignment machine
• Cleans and maintains shop facilities and equipment
• Responds to service calls for assistance; retrieves or repairs vehicles and equipment in the field, as needed
• Assists in locating mechanical parts
• Transports vehicles and equipment to various locations
• Collaborates with vendors, technical staff, and manufacturing representatives
• Performs vehicle inspections for the State of Texas
• Attends all trainings and meetings as required
• Performs special duties as assigned

Specialized Assignments (in addition to the duties above):

Paint and Body

• Performs body shop repairs caused by vandalism and collision accidents such as frame straightening, welding, body panel replacement or repair, surface preparation, paint and clear coat application, and final polishing
• Completes various paint jobs on fuel tanks, toolboxes, and another fleet equipment
• Maintains, cleans, and organizes body shop area and storage
• Monitors the storage and disposal of hazardous materials
• Assists inventory division with identifying paint and part needs
• Prepares and repairs county vehicles for auctions
• Serves as primary contact and technician for vehicle collision and body repairs
• Oversees and performs all autobody repairs for county vehicles
• Collaborates with shop foreman and provides estimates for cost for autobody repairs, paint, and maintenance equipment

• Position involves frequent sitting, standing, and walking
• Position involves climbing ladders, carrying toolboxes, and operating hand and power tools

• Position involves lifting a minimum of 75 pounds to waist height
• Position involves seeing and hearing as well as perceiving colors
• Position involves writing and reading to a size 10 font
• Position involves safely operating a motor vehicle

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

• Indoor and outdoor work in all environments, including inclement weather
• Travel between work sites, as required
• Exposure to dust, chemicals, fumes, bacteria, fungus, and high noise levels

IRREGULAR HOURS

• Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 4 pm) may be required
• May be deemed essential personnel in the event of an emergency

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of vehicle and equipment maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Must provide own hand tools
• Prior experience with scan tools, shop gauges, and welding
• Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
• Basic computer skills such as email, word processing programs, and data entry

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required

• Valid Class C driver's license

Required within six (6) months of employment

• Class A Commercial Driver's License
• State Vehicle Inspector License
• Two (2) Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) certifications OR two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications
• Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Four (4) OEM certifications OR four (4) ASE certifications
• Four (4) years of vehicle and equipment maintenance experience
