Salary Range: $69,388.00 to $104,083.00 per year. Hiring Range: $77,884.00 to $86,736.00. This is an exempt (salaried) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner''s Office (MCMEO) mission is to provide county morgue and medical examiner/forensic pathology services to the residents of Mecklenburg County. The MCMEO interacts with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to assist in death investigations, reporting their findings on the cause and manner of death. The MCMEO also provides consultation and forensic pathology services to one regional county: Cleveland.
Position Specific Information
Onsite position based out of the ME Office located at 3440 Reno Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28216.
ME Investigations Supervisor for 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM shift. 10-hour shifts for 4 days per week, with a 3-week rotation cycle.
Position Summary
Responsible for day-to-day supervision of ME Investigators, including completion of performance reviews. Responsible for developing and administering training programs for new hires, as well as the technical development of existing investigative staff. Responds to death scenes under the Medical Examiner's jurisdiction as needed and/or when an ME Investigator is unavailable.
Essential Functions
Operate as a fully functioning Medicolegal Death Investigator performing those duties typical of a Death Investigator in the Mecklenburg County ME Office (performing death investigations, scene visits, evidence collection, phone calls, working with police and funeral homes, talking with families/friends, data entry, consult with regional MEs, assist with intake and release of decedents, etc.).
Conducts external examinations of Decedents under Medical Examiner jurisdiction, documenting case details, identification, and injuries, draws toxicology samples, completes required reports and a Death Certificate for each case assigned.
May have to assist in cross-covering other shifts on occasion.
Coordinate/meet regularly with other shift supervisors and the Investigations Manager.
Keep investigation staff informed of updates in policies and procedures.
Ensure staff has proper training, assist with ABMDI certification process, and promote CME activities.
Hold regularly scheduled meetings with shift staff (monthly or quarterly as necessary).
Evaluate staff and sign performance reviews for direct reports; recommend disciplinary actions and participate in the disciplinary process.
Participate in the hiring process for investigations staff (interview, recommend hiring, pay recommendation).
Coordinate body arrival and release by transporters and check-in with other staff.
Make work assignments for various duties involved in investigations, assign specific duties to staff.
Reassign cases as necessary to balance out caseload amongst the investigators.
Teach/instruct other investigations staff in methods and procedures.
Provide advice, instruction, and access to resources for investigations staff.
Coordinate with other Investigation Supervisors/Manager to approve vacations and absences for staff (help to ensure coverage).
Ensure staff properly complete payroll entries.
Coordinate and approves staff involvement in trainings, committees, and outside employment.
Coordinate random drug testing of direct reports.
Coordinate assignments of staff during non-routine work events (adverse weather, disasters, mass fatality events).
Ensure staff/facility safety and security issues brought to your attention are properly addressed.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in forensic investigations.
Required to have ABMDI certification at hire date and must be maintained while employed in this position.
Current appointment as a Medical Examiner by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner OR required to receive appointment as a Medical Examiner for Mecklenburg County within 1 year of hire date.
Education:
Bachelor''s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Criminal Justice/Police Science, Forensic Science, or a related field.

Licenses and Certifications:
Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver''s License
Requires County Driving Privileges
Annual Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check required
Preferred Qualifications
Current appointment as a Medical Examiner for Mecklenburg County by the NCOCME.
Prior experience working an overnight shift in a Medical Examiner's office or similar setting.
Prior experience performing external "non-invasive" examinations with decedents.
Knowledge of the NC state systems including MEIS and Forensic Advantage (FA).
