Summary

This faculty member is responsible for teaching mathematics courses from Pre-Algebra to Differential Equations. The instructor will develop and revise courses and course materials as needed. This individual will also assume responsibility for mentoring adjunct faculty. Experience in developing and teaching courses using alternative delivery formats is desirable. This faculty member is a member of the professional teaching staff that is responsible for effectively implementing the mission of NMC and the Science/Math academic area. Responsibilities may include teaching face-to-face on campus, days, nights, weekends, and/or online or Zoom instruction. All Faculty positions commensurate with degree and experience as outlined in the NMC Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifications

Required

• Minimum education of Masters degree in mathematics or coursework consistent with a graduate degree in mathematics (18 graduate credits in mathematics).
• The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and constituents of varying technical backgrounds.
• Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to develop rapport quickly, speak and listen effectively, and the ability to give succinct instructions.
• Experience using a graphing calculator or other math technology as a teaching tool.
• Evidence of successful teaching of Mathematics is required.

Preferred

• Demonstrated experience in teaching developmental mathematics.
• Experience in the instruction of online courses using a Course Management System (CMS).
• Experience at the community college level as instructor and/or student.

Essential Responsibilities

Provide classroom/lab instruction to students and develop theory including but not limited to online, accelerated, livestream, hybrid and face-to-face formats

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Teaching Responsibilities

When teaching any classroom or lab courses, the instructor will meet the responsibilities of regular faculty in the areas of Curriculum, Teaching Effectiveness, Faculty Professional Development, Support of College, Community Initiatives, and Professional Qualities and Abilities.

• Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities
• Uses current and emerging technologies in distance learning and in the classroom; conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques
• Listens to students and coaches them to actively participate in the learning process
• Uses a variety of assessments to promotes student demonstration of learning through exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings
• Provides a course syllabus to the students that includes the College Syllabus information outlined in Moodle
• Is accessible to students during formal office hours and other times as needed
• Maintains and regularly updates Moodle gradebook and/or other electronic grading systems

Continually engages in learning and scholarship in the area of specialization

Support of College, Community Initiatives

• Participates actively in the shared governance system
• Participates in academic area meetings and other scheduled area activities.
• Meets requirements for faculty evaluation and academic advising
• Serves on specific academic area and College wide committees
• Supports the academic area and college through other work normally expected of faculty members

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
