JOB TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE
REPORTS TO: HR Generalist or NISEC Administrator
MAJOR FUNCTION: Responsible for medical and safety concerns of the students and staff within the NISEC.
REQUIREMENTS: A. Valid license as certified nurse or registered nurse
B. At least three (3) years experience with patients who are medically fragile
C. Work collaboratively with the school staffs, medical professionals and parents
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Contract for school year and hours determined by Board of Managers. All other working terms and conditions of employment are established by the Board of Managers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform all duties of the school nurse functions as required by the NISEC, including:
- Maintain the medical records of the students, obtain pertinent medical data as required by the State Board of Health (i.e., immunizations, vision screening, scoliosis screening, completing the report for hearing screening done by speech therapy) and providing this information to receiving schools.
- Assure students entering the program have required immunization and obtaining needed medical information on all students.
- Prepare the required reports biannually and send the information to the State Board of Health and local health departments upon securing the Dean of Student's approval.
- Interpret and provide medical information to appropriate staff and provide special training related to students medical needs.
- Observe student experiencing health-related problems and report to physician, Dean of Students and parent.
- Provide skilled nursing assistance to the medically fragile student, i.e., catheterization, suctioning, oral feeding tube insertions, glucose testing and assisting with the development of the Individualized Health Plan.
- Distribute medications, maintain medication records, and inform staff of various side effects relating to specific medications and method of administration when on field trips.
- Provide yearly training, in-servicing, and certification, as needed, to NISEC staff, those schools serviced by NISEC, and parents regarding special needs, mandatory universal precautions, etc.
- Evaluate and provide for medical needs of students and staff in emergency situations.
- Contact parents of students due to illness, extended absences, personal hygiene, etc.
- Notify direct supervisor of problems relating to health, safety, and medical needs of students or staff in NISEC School.
- Provide health and safety programs for the students.
- Requisition and distribute to staff safety precaution supplies and equipment such as goggles, etc.
- Work with staff, students, and their families in a professional manner.
- Requisition and maintain medical and office supplies and equipment.
- Complete a yearly inventory of all equipment and supplies.
- Remain current on issues in the medical field and relating concerns to the medical needs of students.
- Other duties as assigned.
