Job Summary:
The Materials Testing Manager is responsible for managing and operating a mobile materials testing laboratory in support of Sundt''s Transportation Group. This role provides timely, accurate materials testing services for soils, concrete, and aggregates to support both construction and preconstruction teams. The Materials Testing Manager plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with project specifications, agency requirements, and Sundt quality standards while enabling informed decision-making in the field. This position combines technical expertise, field leadership, and coordination across multiple project teams, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist preconstruction teams with materials testing strategies, schedules, and cost considerations during estimating and planning phases.
Assist with training field personnel on materials testing requirements, procedures, and documentation expectations.
Conduct job hazard analyses and ensure safe work practices for all testing activities.
Coordinate laboratory deployment, setup, and demobilization across multiple project sites as needed.
Coordinate testing activities with project managers, superintendents, quality managers, and field crews to minimize impacts to production.
Enforce Sundt safety policies and applicable regulations related to laboratory operations, field testing, and transportation of equipment.
Ensure materials testing activities comply with contract requirements, owner/agency standards, and Sundt quality management systems.
Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and inventory of testing equipment, tools, and consumables.
Identify nonconforming materials or results and work collaboratively with project teams to support corrective actions.
Lead, mentor, and support materials testing technicians assigned to the mobile laboratory, as applicable.
Manage day-to-day operations of a mobile materials testing laboratory serving active and upcoming transportation projects.
Perform and oversee field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, and aggregates in accordance with project specifications, agency standards, and applicable ASTM/AASHTO procedures.
Promote a strong culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the testing function.
Provide technical support to construction and preconstruction teams, including interpretation of test results and constructability input related to materials.
Review, validate, and distribute test results, reports, and certifications in a timely and accurate manner.
Support audits, inspections, and reviews by owners, agencies, or third-party representatives.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Ability to lift and handle testing equipment and materials as required.
Ability to work in field and laboratory environments, including exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
Bachelor''s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Materials Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with field crews, management, and preconstruction teams.
Experience operating or managing laboratory or field-testing programs.
Experience supporting DOT, municipal, or other public agency transportation projects.
Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently in a mobile environment.
Minimum 5-8 years of experience in construction materials testing, preferably on transportation or heavy civil projects.
Prior supervisory or team leadership experience.
Proficient in documentation, reporting, and basic computer applications.
Relevant certifications (ACI, NICET, state DOT certifications, or equivalent).
Strong technical and analytical skills related to construction materials.
Strong working knowledge of soils, concrete, and aggregate testing procedures (ASTM/AASHTO).
Travel to multiple project sites within the Transportation Group''s operating region.
Valid commercial driver''s license (CDL) to travel with mobile lab.
Valid driver''s license and ability to travel between project sites.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to; steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.)
May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis
May stoop, kneel, or bend, on an occasional basis.
May use telephone, computer system, email, or other electronic devices to communicate with internal and external customers or vendors.
Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures.
Occasionally will climb stairs, ladders, etc.
Required to use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry or feel objects on a frequent basis.
Will interact with people frequently during a shift/workday.
Will lift, push or pull objects up to 50lbs on an occasional basis.
Will sit, stand or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift/workday.
Will work various shifts, including swing, night and weekend.
