As a Cell Materials Integration Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in bringing new battery materials into Teslas in-house cell product. You will shepherd novel cell materials chemistries and designs from early-phase & pilot-scale development into Teslas Gigafactory cell production lines and final cell products.
This involves collaborating with cross-functional teams including materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, NPI, supplier industrialization, etc., to ensure seamless scale-up while optimizing for performance, safety, and manufacturability.
Lead the integration of new battery cell materials and designs as they are handed off from the materials development team into manufacturing and mass production at Teslas Gigafactories. This includes:
- Adapting lab-scale processes for high-volume production.
- Troubleshooting integration challenges.
- Ensuring compatibility with existing manufacturing equipment.
Work closely with materials development and manufacturing engineering teams to identify critical requirements and develop functional specifications to ensure scalability of new cell materials from lab & pilot and into cell mass production. Troubleshoot production challenges, document learnings, and provide feedback to next-generation materials and manufacturing development.
Design and execute experiments and validation tests to assess material performance. Qualify new materials for cell-level performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
Maintain rigorous documentation of integration processes, material specifications, and test results. Prepare reports and presentations for cross-functional stakeholders across materials engineering, manufacturing, NPI, etc., highlighting progress, challenges, and recommendations.
Requirements:
- Degree or Equivalent Experience in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in scaling R&D prototypes to manufacturing is highly desirable.
- Prior experience in Li-ion manufacturing or similar factory environments is a plus.
- Familiarity with Li-ion cells, cell components, and cell manufacturing processes.
- Strong communication skills for cross-team collaboration.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and judicious decision-making in the absence of complete information or test results.
- Flexibility to travel to Teslas Gigafactories (Austin, Berlin) for extended periods of time to lead materials integration into cell production and on short notice to troubleshoot emergent materials issues at the factory.
Benefits:
Along with competitive pay as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire:
- Medical plans: Plan options with 0 payroll deduction.
