Material Handling Automation Controls Engineer

    Highlights

Monitor and troubleshoot industrial networks (Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus, AS‑i), motor control systems, servo/VFD drives, and electrical distribution. One hour you might refine an RSLogix 5000 routine on an Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix platform; the next, you’ll tune a drive or resolve a DeviceNet hiccup that’s slowing a sortation lane.

    Description

Shape the heartbeat of high‑volume operations

Step into an environment where your hands-on engineering decisions keep conveyors humming, sorters precise, and facilities safe and productive. If you thrive on diagnosing tough controls issues and turning root causes into lasting improvements, this role gives you the autonomy and scale to make a measurable impact.

    A day in this role

Your evening begins Monday–Friday on one of two typical windows: 6 PM–2 AM or 7 PM–3 AM (flexibility is essential). After a quick safety huddle and a scan of system KPIs, you’ll review SCADA alarms, inspect critical assets, and dive into PLC logic where needed. One hour you might refine an RSLogix 5000 routine on an Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix platform; the next, you’ll tune a drive or resolve a DeviceNet hiccup that’s slowing a sortation lane. When escalations arise—on‑site or remotely—you’re the first call, leading fast, safe recovery and coordinating help as needed.

    Core responsibilities

    • Champion safety and regulatory compliance across all system operations and maintenance activities.
    • Troubleshoot, modify, and validate controls software for material handling systems (conveyors, sortation, scanners, vision, print‑and‑apply, and SCADA).
    • Serve as the initial escalation point during and after business hours; rapidly stabilize incidents and summon additional resources when required.
    • Verify equipment operates within design limits and meets client performance expectations through inspections and tests.
    • Scope and oversee contractor work (licensed installs, proprietary upgrades, specialized maintenance), from request creation to scheduling and quality inspection.
    • Engineer reliability and process improvements from concept through network-wide implementation.
    • Monitor and troubleshoot industrial networks (Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus, AS‑i), motor control systems, servo/VFD drives, and electrical distribution.
    • Track MHE performance metrics and partner with site teams to eliminate electrical issues affecting throughput and uptime.
    • Lead failure reviews, produce actionable recommendations, and support retraining to prevent recurrence.
    • Conduct control system assessments to sustain and elevate equipment reliability.
    • Communicate clearly with leadership, operations, and maintenance on technical risks, timelines, and production impacts.
    • Build strong, solutions-focused relationships with the client and Operations Maintenance partners.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Schedule

Primary coverage runs Monday–Friday with evening shifts typically 6 PM–2 AM or 7 PM–3 AM. Flexibility for nights, weekends, and holidays may be required based on operational needs.

    Qualifications

    • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
    • Bachelor’s degree preferred and 2–5 years of relevant experience; a strong blend of education and hands‑on experience can substitute.
    • Participation in at least two design cycles (specification, component selection, programming).
    • 2+ years with PLC programming, robotics controls/components, and SCADA-based monitoring/control.
    • Willingness to support a flexible schedule/shift/work area, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
    • Self-directed problem solver who executes from general guidance with minimal oversight.
    • Physical capability to stoop, stand, walk, climb stairs/ladders, and regularly lift/carry 50+ lbs.
    • Strong communicator able to convey complex, sensitive information and set expectations effectively.

    Preferred

    • 2+ years of apprenticeship or equivalent experience in control systems troubleshooting/programming.
    • Background supporting diverse conveyor and sortation technologies.
    • Experience performing robotic maintenance.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and related tools.
    • Exceptional organization with an inquisitive, continuous-improvement mindset.
    • Comfort with advanced math (percentages, fractions, and finance-related calculations).
