Primary Purpose:

Under general supervision, perform skilled work in construction, alteration, repair, and installation of fixtures, buildings, and structures throughout the district. Maintain district structures and furniture in attractive and safe condition.

Education/Certification:

Eighth grade education or higher

Valid Texas driver's license

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language

Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in carpentry

Ability to use hand and power tools

Ability to follow written and verbal instruction

Ability to read blueprints and diagrams

Ability to measure and perform mathematical computations

Experience:

1+ years experience as skilled carpenter, preferred

1+ years in Masonry or related field, preferred

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable

Technical Skills, Responsibilities and Duties

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Read and interpret work orders, plans, blueprints, and specifications to determine methods, procedures, materials, tools, and equipment needed.
• Plan, lay out, construct, install, and repair masonry structures, cabinets, shelves, partitions, furniture, fixtures, and related components from initial layout to final assembly.
• Select appropriate materials, cement types, hardware, and supplies; make time and material estimates.
• Cut masonry materials to size using knives, saws, chisels, planes, or other special tools.
• Shape, mark, and assemble materials to prescribed measurements, using pencil, chalk, and appropriate marking devices.
• Install, repair, and replace doors, windows, flooring, ceilings, glass, building hardware, screens, plastic laminate, and other surfaces.
• Apply gravel or pebbles over top layers using rakes or stiff-bristled brooms.
• Cover concrete and exterior walls of structures with masonry cement, wood, and related materials, using brushes, knives, punches, hammers, and other tools.
• Lay out reference lines and points for computing location and positioning masonry material.
• Install, repair, or replace outdoor structures such as sidewalks, fences, gates, bleachers, steps, and underpinning for portable buildings.
• Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
• Construct and repair outdoor equipment including cedar fences, gates, and bleachers.
• Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
• Install interior and exterior plastering on walls.
• Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment by following established inspection procedures.
• Wire, nail, clip, or staple masonry framework and flat concrete surfaces.
• Repair structures and fixtures of concrete, under block and brick, using carpenter's power tools and conforming to local building codes.
• Assist with the installation and relocation of portable buildings, including constructing steps and installing underpinning.
• Demonstrate proper techniques to new workers in applying various masonry materials.
• Inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure conformance to specifications.
• Coordinate activities of workers engaged in masonry or concrete repair projects.
• Remove and replace sections of structures prior to and after installation of materials.
• Pressure wash masonry structures as needed.
• Follow up on warranties of masonry projects.
• Maintain and update masonry supply inventory.
• Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
• Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
• Ensure all tools and equipment are in safe operating condition.
• Maintain accurate records on materials and labor used.
• Clean work areas after completion of jobs, removing scraps, lumber, and debris as needed.
• Respond to emergency calls as needed.
• Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques, including lifting, climbing, and handling hazardous materials safely.
• Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that cannot be corrected to a supervisor immediately.
• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Promote safety at all times in all phases of work.
• Work with building principals and supervisors to complete assigned projects.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving

Lifting:

Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment:

Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel
