Brief Summary of Work for this Position MarineQuest Summer Program Weekend Instructors are with students from the late afternoon until lights out on Fridays and again from wake-up to lights out on Saturday and Sunday. Weekend Staff will communicate relevant information with day and overnight staff and ensure student success. Overnight Instructors conduct recreational activities for individual and group participation and supervise downtime and meals. Staff are required to transport students, typically in 15-passenger vans. Staff may be required to supervise and document students taking personal medications.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Completion of 2 years toward a bachelors degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to work outdoors in Wilmington, NC summer conditions.
  • Ability to navigate uneven surfaces and terrain such as sand, sports fields, and boardwalks.
  • Prior experience leading recreational activities for youth.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience supervising students ages 9 - 17 years old.
  • Ability to carry 35 lbs.
  • Completion of bachelors degree or equivalent.
  • Lifeguard Certification.
  • Knowledge of marine sciences is a plus.

Required Certifications or Licensure

  • First Aid and CPR Certification must be obtained by June 1, 2026.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Must complete online training modules and attend MarineQuest in-person staff training held June 2nd - June 6th, 2025.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit College/School Information

Work Hours

  • Evening positions: 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM Sunday and 3:30 PM - 10:00 PM Monday-Thursday.
  • Weekend positions: 3:30 PM - 10:30 PM Friday; 6:30 AM - 10:30 PM Saturday and Sunday.
  • RA positions: 6:30 AM - 8:00 AM and 9:30 PM - 11:00 PM Monday through Thursday.
  • Friday AM Work Days: Friday - Sunday.

Working weekends are June 12-14, June 26-28, July 3-5 (includes holiday pay), and July 17-19.

Hours Per Week: 40 hours

Type of Position: Anticipated Hiring Range 12 - 18 hour - dependent on qualifications and specific position.

Special Instructions to Applicants Please note this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department needs with the possibility of continuation. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
