Description
We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Technical Engineering Manager with a strong background in EMS / PCB / PCBA contract manufacturing to lead technical engineering and SMT programming activities within a complex, high-mix electronics manufacturing environment.
This is a highly hands-on engineering leadership position. Direct EMS/PCB/PCBA contract manufacturing experience is required. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with SMT manufacturing, equipment, programming, manufacturing data, and production processes.
This individual will provide leadership across Technical Engineering, SMT Programming, manufacturing data preparation, production documentation, and manufacturing support while working closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Program Management, Planning, Supply Chain, and Production.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and technical oversight for Technical Engineering, production documentation, manufacturing data preparation, and SMT programming
- Manage, develop, and establish priorities for Technical Engineering and SMT Programming personnel
- Establish effective workflow, accountability, priorities, and cross-training
- Lead technical activities within a high-mix EMS/PCBA contract manufacturing environment
- Work hands-on within the manufacturing environment alongside Operations, Engineering, Quality, and Production
- Provide direct leadership and technical responsibility for SMT programming activities
- Manage the creation, validation, release, revision, and maintenance of SMT placement programs
- Support SMT production equipment, including FUJI NXT III or similar platforms
- Review and process manufacturing data including Bills of Material (BOMs), CAD files, Gerber files, drawings, centroid/pick-and-place data, specifications, and engineering requirements
- Ensure customer manufacturing data packages are complete, accurate, and production-ready
- Lead technical reviews from receipt of customer data through manufacturing release
- Support complex PCB/PCBA assemblies with high component counts and intricate designs
- Oversee SMT component/package library development and maintenance
- Ensure component locations, rotations, package definitions, polarity, orientation, feeder requirements, and placement parameters are properly defined
- Optimize SMT placement sequences, feeder setup, nozzle utilization, machine balancing, throughput, and equipment utilization
- Support NPI, prototype, first-build, and production-launch activities
- Provide floor-level technical support during first article, first-build, and production validation
- Troubleshoot placement defects, component orientation issues, programming problems, package/library errors, and other SMT-related production issues
- Coordinate Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), component substitutions, customer revisions, and manufacturing process changes
- Maintain revision and configuration control of SMT programs and manufacturing documentation
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing setup time, programming time, placement errors, machine downtime, and production interruptions
- Develop and mentor technical engineering and SMT programming personnel
- Partner across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Program Management, Planning, and Supply Chain
Qualifications
- Direct EMS / PCB / PCBA contract manufacturing experience required
- Strong experience in a high-mix electronics contract manufacturing environment
- Extensive hands-on experience with SMT production, equipment, programming, and processes
- Strong manufacturing/technical engineering background
- Strong knowledge of complex PCB/PCBA assembly processes
- Experience with SMT placement programming and component/package libraries
- Working knowledge of CAD, Gerber, centroid/pick-and-place data, BOMs, and electronic manufacturing data
- Experience with FUJI SMT equipment and programming platforms strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of component identification, package types, polarity, orientation, and reference designators
- Demonstrated experience managing technical or engineering personnel
- Experience leading within a large manufacturing organization strongly preferred
- Experience within an approximately $80M–$100M+ manufacturing business preferred
- Experience supporting a significant organization, ideally approximately 175+ employees
- Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills
- Strong project planning and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple production priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Strong communication and cross-functional leadership skills
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred
- Equivalent directly applicable electronics manufacturing and SMT experience may be considered
- Progressive electronics manufacturing, technical engineering, SMT programming, or manufacturing engineering experience
- Previous supervisory or technical team leadership experience required
- High-mix EMS manufacturing experience strongly preferred
