The Utah Nanofab is seeking an experienced, hands-on engineer to provide instruction on engineering methods and tool operation to researchers in its world-class micro- and nanofabrication facility. The engineer position will provide tool training sessions including but not limited to EBL and laser lithography tools, RIE and DRIE, and deposition. This role requires the ability to work both independently and with senior engineering staff to provide a best practice training environment. This position plays a pivotal role in enabling leading-edge research and development in microelectronics, sensors, materials, micro-optics, and nanotechnology. The successful candidate will demonstrate technical aptitude, fabrication processing knowledge, and associated tool set operation as well as a passion for fostering a collaborative research environment.

Evaluate, select, procure, install, and troubleshoot manufacturing equipment. Perform ongoing maintenance tasks, repairs, modifications, and upgrades on manual and/or automated equipment. Keep records of equipment performance and problems. Suggest and implement changes to enhance equipment safety, quality, and output. Collaborate cross-functionally on projects with design, engineering, process, quality, and/or production teams. Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or manufacturing engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Provides researcher tool training sessions for lithography (including EBL), deposition, and dry etch tool sets within guidelines provided by senior engineering staff.
  • Works with senior engineering staff in maintaining tool integrity including preventative maintenance.
  • Tests and monitors equipment and engineering systems.
  • May provide tool related design and creative guidance to researchers.
  • May train students in engineering techniques.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and effective work environment.
  • Works independently in performing tasks of limited complexity.

Working conditions

  • Work performed primarily in a cleanroom environment
  • Frequent standing, walking and working in a protective garment
  • Occasional handling of chemicals, hazardous gases and use of safety equipment

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Manufacturing Equipment Engineer, I: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.

Manufacturing Equipment Engineer, II: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences

  • Hands-on experience with other process tool sets such as sputter and evaporative deposition, DRIE and RIE etch, spin coating, and wet bench.
  • Experience with Proximity Effect Correction (PEC) software
  • Master's or Ph.D in a relevant engineering or physical science discipline
