Company Overview:
Flowserve is a global manufacturer of pumps, valves, seals, and aftermarket services, delivering comprehensive flow control solutions that support essential industries such as energy, clean water, and pharmaceuticals. If you're looking for a culture built on ingenuity, innovation, and excellence, Flowserve offers the opportunity to put your experience in motion. Whether you're an individual contributor or a people leader, you'll find meaningful opportunities for professional growth, competitive rewards, and a workplace grounded in our core values: People, Safety, Integrity, Ownership and Ingenuity. At Flowserve, we're inspired by what we can achieve together-creating extraordinary flow control solutions that strengthen today's world while building tomorrow.
Flowserve is seeking a hands-on Manufacturing & Safety Engineer to join our flagship aftermarket Quick Response Center (QRC) in West Chicago, IL. Operating within a modern, climate-controlled, non-union 50,000 sq. ft. precision repair facility, this dual-impact operational role bridges manufacturing engineering, shop tooling solutions, and facility-wide SHEA (Safety, Health, and Environmental Affairs) leadership.
Reporting directly to the Site Operations Manager, you will serve as the facility's go-to technical resource for eliminating safety hazards through practical engineering controls, optimizing manual machining and pump assembly workflows, and driving continuous improvement. You will partner closely with shop supervisors, manual machinists, mechanics, and corporate environmental health and safety leaders to deliver safe, high-quality, and on-time aftermarket overhauls across industrial pumps and heavy rotating equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Direct day-to-day safety, health, and environmental programs across the West Chicago QRC, leading safety observation tracking, incident investigations, daily toolbox talks, and annual safety audits.
Partner directly with machinists and technicians to design out physical, ergonomic, and mechanical risks using engineered controls, custom fixturing, and improved machinery guarding.
Manage incoming chemical and material safety by reviewing and authorizing Return Goods Forms to verify proper decontamination of customer equipment prior to teardown.
Support the manual machine shop (vertical/horizontal lathes, horizontal boring mills) and welding teams with specialty tooling selection, lifting device design, and custom assembly fixtures.
Lead technical evaluations, economic justifications, and capital expenditure (CapEx) execution for new machine tool acquisitions, facility upgrades, and floor layout optimizations.
Drive Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on shop non-conformances (NCRs), partnering with quality and operations teams to eliminate rework and resolve machining bottlenecks.
Implement lean manufacturing principles, 5S standards, and standard work procedures to boost shop throughput and turnaround times.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical industrial manufacturing experience).
3-7+ years of hands-on manufacturing engineering, operations engineering, or plant safety engineering experience within a heavy industrial manufacturing, machining, or rotating equipment environment.
Strong working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards, Job Safety Analyses (JSA), hazard abatement, and machine shop safety compliance.
Solid mechanical understanding of manual metal-cutting operations (lathes, mills, boring bars), welding, teardown/inspection (DCI), and rotating equipment assembly.
Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, or AutoCAD) to design shop fixtures, lifting aids, and equipment layout revisions.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships across shop-floor craftspersons and plant leadership.
Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience in an industrial pump, compressor, mechanical seal, or heavy rotating equipment repair center (QRC/aftermarket service facility).
Formal training or certifications in environmental health and safety (OSHA 10/30, ASP, or CSP) or Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt).
Hands-on experience developing capital expenditure proposals, vendor tooling evaluations, and rigging/lifting plan specifications.
Background facilitating formal Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations and managing quality NCR disposition workflows.
