About The Role
FTI Strategic Communications is currently looking for a Managing Director in our People & Transformation practice who will expand our cross-functional capability focused on labor relations. The successful Managing Director will have experience advising on strategies that enable stronger labor relations and counseling companies during organizing efforts. As a senior strategist working directly with C-suite management, Boards and other advisors, the Managing Director must be able to nimbly build campaigns aligned with clients’ culture and goals, thinking ahead and responding to new inputs in real time. Experience in external as well as internal communications – particularly in fast-moving situations – is required.
A successful Managing Director understands and lives by FTI’s values, Code of Ethics and the Strategic Communications Rules of Practice. Additional information about FTI’s values, Code of Ethics and the Strategic Communications Rules of Practice can be accessed here. FTI professionals must act with the highest level of integrity at all times and hold our clients accountable for the same.
Additionally, an effective Managing Director is confident in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, where situations may shift quickly and require an immediate response. The Managing Director must be able to manage multiple clients, direct and coach teams of varying experience levels, ensure projects remain on schedule and on budget, and proactively identify opportunities to expand the relationship both during and after the restructuring event.
Some travel may be required including the possibility of being a key contributor to onsite client engagements, but this is NOT a traditional on-the-road consulting role. Travel is more the exception than the norm.
What You’ll Do
The Managing Director will lead client mandates on a day-to-day basis and serve in a variety of roles from strategist to counselor to implementer. Our team prides itself on maintaining an inclusive spirit in which all team members are encouraged to offer ideas and stretch their abilities on an ongoing basis. We work diligently to make opportunities available, and all roll up our sleeves to support our clients and each other with tasks large and small. As a result, there is no such thing as a “typical day” for our team members, but you can expect your work will include the following:
Client Delivery
Serve as a day-to-day client lead on accounts, managing the overall quality of work and representing the team in client meetings, conference calls and while working at client sites
Present confidently to C-suite executives and Board members as a trusted advisor
Develop and lead the execution of communication strategies that ensure all stakeholders receive timely and accurate information as appropriate, incorporating expertise from across the FTI platform to deliver the best outcomes for our clients
Maintain productive working relationships with law firms, collaborating seamlessly as part of a client’s advisory team and earning trust for future referrals
Manage up and down – often across multiple teams – to ensure work is completed on schedule, at the right levels and in a tightly coordinated manner
Develop and manage to client budgets, as required
Oversee billing in compliance with the specifications outlined in the U.S. Bankruptcy Code
Anticipate client needs and concerns and proactively work with senior leaders to address them
Business Development
Build internal and external referral sources via ongoing networking
Actively win and expand business through the development of client proposals, thought leadership and other related initiatives; demonstrate a deep understanding of FTI’s capabilities and create opportunities beyond their own expertise
Lead the development of new offerings that address needs in the marketplace
Practice Leadership
Participate as a member of the People & Transformation senior leadership team, shaping our strategic direction and talent development strategy
Serve as a subject matter expert in labor relations and employee engagement, continually advancing your own knowledge and helping to grow the bench in the specialty area
Contribute to practice leadership, including efforts to mentor and train other team members; share and continue to build upon best practices and foster trusted relationships with colleagues across the business
Participate in firm initiatives (e.g., learning and development, diversity and inclusion, community service and/or other task forces) designed to create a strong culture and/or build FTI Consulting's brand externally
Coach more junior team members, helping to set SMART goals, providing ongoing feedback and support and delivering thoughtful semi-annual reviews
How You’ll Grow
Direct access to our most senior leaders and defined long-term career planning will ensure you continue to develop your skills as a client practitioner and trusted advisor with a keen sense of the business. You will continue to be challenged as you partner with internal teams in various specialty areas (both within Strategic Communications and with other FTI business segments) to tackle a myriad of client challenges in a variety of industries, and you will be given opportunities to take ownership of certain aspects of our restructuring offering.
