The successful candidate will have substantial hands-on experience examining title to New Mexico lands and preparing comprehensive, well-supported title opinions for drilling, development, acquisitions, and ongoing oil and gas operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently prepare original drilling title opinions, supplemental and supplemental drilling opinions, division order title opinions, acquisition title opinions, and other oil and gas title opinions covering lands in New Mexico.
  • Analyze chains of title and examine county clerk records, deeds, mineral reservations, oil and gas leases, assignments, probate and heirship records, court proceedings, mortgages, liens, and other instruments affecting mineral and leasehold ownership.
  • Research and interpret applicable New Mexico statutes, appellate decisions, real property principles, oil and gas regulations, and recording requirements when determining ownership and evaluating title risks.
  • Determine ownership of mineral interests, royalty interests, overriding royalty interests, working interests, leasehold interests, and other interests affecting exploration and production.
  • Analyze severed mineral estates, split-estate issues, federal and state mineral interests, federal oil and gas leases, communitization agreements, pooling arrangements, spacing requirements, and other matters affecting the development of New Mexico oil and gas properties.
  • Where applicable, examine title and leasing issues involving federal minerals administered by the Bureau of Land Management, New Mexico State Trust Land Office interests, and lands subject to federal, state, or other governmental leasing and regulatory requirements.
  • Recognize gaps in title, conflicting conveyances, unreleased encumbrances, defective legal descriptions, probate and succession issues, missing instruments, and other title defects. Draft clear, actionable requirements and recommend appropriate curative measures.
  • Provide timely title analysis for drilling programs, leasehold acquisitions, development projects, ownership verification, and other upstream operations.
  • Communicate title conclusions, legal risks, ownership calculations, and recommended curative actions to landmen, land administration personnel, operators, in-house counsel, and business teams.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license and good standing with the New Mexico Bar, or eligibility for admission consistent with the requirements of the position.
  • Substantial experience practicing oil and gas law, with significant hands-on responsibility for drafting and reviewing oil and gas title opinions.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing title opinions covering lands located in New Mexico.
  • Strong working knowledge of New Mexico real property law, mineral law, oil and gas law, and the recording systems applicable to land and mineral interests.
  • Proven ability to independently examine complex chains of title, calculate ownership interests, identify title defects, and prepare comprehensive, defensible title opinions.
  • Extensive familiarity with oil and gas leases, deeds, mineral reservations, assignments, probate and heirship records, and other instruments affecting mineral and leasehold ownership.
  • Strong legal research, analytical reasoning, drafting, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and deliver accurate work product with minimal supervision.
