    Description

Fulfillment Optimization (FO) organization makes the delivery promise the customer sees, and plans the order placed customers, plan labor and transportation resources. Which help to deliver on time and at the optimal cost. The FO Support team keeps that running. We are the central owner of operational excellence for FO, the frontline on-call for its services, and the team that automates away the operational load for an org of 500+ engineers.

We are looking for a hands-on System Development Manager to lead one of our System Development and Support Engineering teams. You will own the reliability and on-call health of critical production systems. You will drive the automation that removes recurring operational load. And you will grow the engineers who do it. This role is for a technical leader who wants to raise the operational bar across a large org, not just one team.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead, hire, and develop a team of System Development and Support Engineers across multiple locations and time zones. Manage their performance and growth at every level.
    • Own the operational health of your team"s services - availability, latency, on-call, and incident response - and hold a high bar for operational excellence.
    • Drive automation and tooling that reduces manual effort and eliminates recurring operational load, and set the technical direction for how your team builds it.
    • Own root-cause analysis and error correction. Turn incidents into durable systemic fixes rather than repeat work.
    • Define your team"s roadmap by working backward from customer and business problems, and partner with engineering and business stakeholders to prioritize competing demands.
    • Stay close to the technical details - review designs, remove blockers, and make sound build-versus-buy and reliability trade-offs.

    A day in the life

You start the day with your team"s operational signals - the health of the FO services you own and the metrics that matter. You join a design review for a new automation that will raise operational excellence across the org, shape a solution that removes manual work, and press the team on whether it will scale. You deliver through your engineers in Bellevue and partner with the other two FO Support teams to build at org scale. You unblock a cross-team dependency and review your roadmap. Across the day you balance keeping today"s systems running with the automation that cuts tomorrow"s load - and you grow the engineers who do both.

    About the team

Fulfillment Optimization decides how every Amazon order gets fulfilled - forecasting labor and transportation, configuring the network, and making the delivery promise the customer sees. FO Support is how that stays reliable. We are the frontline 24/7 on-call for FO"s service teams and for the transportation network configuration changes that keep deliveries flowing. We own operational excellence for the org - fewer incoming tickets, more resolved within SLA, more resolved without pulling developers off their work - and we build the automation and tooling that makes it possible. The team spans Bellevue and India and works closely with software, science, and business partners across FO.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
